Flattered and flustered

I’ve been obsessing way too much over something stupid; I couldn’t even sleep last night.  I found out thirdhand about a band that recorded cover versions of a couple of my songs. That’s very cool, but they’re selling CDRs on their website, and I have no idea where they got the idea they could use my tunes royalty-free without asking.  They didn’t contact Drag City, didn’t ask for publishing info, didn’t offer to send me a copy, they didn’t even introduce themselves.  I wonder if the music’s any good?  I have no way of knowing.

Songs about songs

I’m writing a song about writing a song (or not being able to).  It’s about time; all the best songwriters have at least one of those!  Gillian Welch has the best one I can think of, "One Little Song".  The Carpenters had "I Can’t Make Music".  And um… I can’t think of any more but there must be lots.

John and I watched the rest of Fassbinder’s The Marriage of Maria Braun tonight; we’d started it yesterday.  I went through the first half-hour of the movie thinking it was the story of fscking EVA Braun, I kept waiting for Hitler to show up!  Another half-hour went by and I mentioned that to John, and he confessed he’d been thinking the same thing and was still waiting for ol’ Adolph to step in.  Heheheh.  Durrrrrr… "Which war is this anyway?  Ain’t he dead already?"

Gillian Welch

Fantastic show.  It was just her and David Rawlings, what more do you need?  Not even an opening band.  She played a bunch of my favorite songs, including "One Little Song" and "My Morphine".  Didn’t play "Paper Wings" though. They played two sets and two encores and got assaulted with requests from the audience, so I can’t complain!  Her voice was spectacular, and with her and David together, it’s the sweetest sound on earth.  So glad I finally got to see them live, thank you John!!

Song tumor of the day

"Like a Rock" by Bob Seger

Snownews

I found an(other) RSS newsreader that I really like, called Snownews.  It’s a console app, totally text-based.  It opens your URLs in lynx!!!  Fast as hell too.  Who needs a GUI?

Is it Monday already?

John and I have been sick with colds, he’s taking today off from work.  It’s not too bad, we’re not bedridden or anything, but it is a yucky inconvenience.  We’re going to see Gillian Welch tomorrow night and there’s no way in hell I’m missing that, even if I have to wear a SARS mask.

I finished my mix CD for Rock For Kids, it came out pretty good.  The auction is at the Smart Bar next Wednesday (the 24th) so if you’re curious what I put on it, why don’t you go out and place a bid?  I made a pretty cover for it too, though I’m sure others have done a better job of that.  I just grabbed some crayons and commenced to scribblin’.

R.I.P. Johnny Cash

I’m speechless.  The Man In Black is gone.  :-(

helo! I’m 192.168.1.100

I have a Linux question for Rob anyone who knows.  (heheh) How come when I send out SMTP mail through Linux, the header is giving away my local IP number from the LAN?  It’s in the received line of the raw header of all my sent e-mails, I’ll show you.

Header snippet of test message as sent from OSX:
Received: from some.dynamic.name.from.earthlink.dsl ([XX.XXX.X.XX] helo=edithfrost.com)
(I replaced my WAN IP with X’s even though it changes all the time.)

The same message as sent from Linux:
Received: from some.dynamic.name.from.earthlink.dsl ([XX.XXX.X.XX] helo=192.168.1.XXX)
(the latter being whichever local IP number I’m using at the time)

2 years on

Okay, so it’s September 11th.  Rather than dwell on horrible memories I’m trying to keep in mind what this day used to mean to me before the world turned upside down.  That is, it’s my Holler Sister Deborah Moore’s birthday.  HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEBORAH!!!  No matter what else happened on this day, I’ll always be happy that she was born, and that we both moved from Texas to NYC so we could meet each other.  She’s still a New Yorker and thank god she’s still around for me to wish her a happy birthday, so I’m going to call her right now and do that.  :-)

SpamAssassin

I installed SpamAssassin on my iBook and set it up so Evolution will process all incoming mail through that before it does anything else.  Seems to be working, but I’m still waiting for a new spam to come in so I can be sure.  Of course the one time I want to get spam, I get nothing!  But don’t take this as an invitation to sign me up for more, ‘cuz I get plenty already.  Just not when I’m looking for it.

This week doesn’t suck

Daddy’s doing real well, I spoke to him yesterday afternoon and he sounded very strong, like nothing had happened.  It was his 63rd birthday as well.  :-) Lucie already went back home to San Antonio — she’s such a (self-admitted) control freak that I know he really must be doing well and is in good hands.  She’d never leave if she had the tiniest doubt… or anyway she’d probably ask me to go out there if that were the case and she really did have to leave.  I still might go out there if he has any trouble with his recovery and needs a hand, but for the moment all seems to be as it should be. What a huge relief!!!  I mean… they weren’t just trimmin’ his toenails you know.  It was his **19th** major surgery in 2-1/2 years, and it was a biggie too, but he did great.  I can’t tell you how much the cloud has lifted in this house, and I’m sure in the households of all my siblings etc. as well.

It’s today

Daddy’s having his surgery today, so please send out your good vibes.  I’ve been talking to him on the phone every day or two.  Glad Lucie’s out there with him, but really wish I could be there too.

I don’t feel like blogging, I must say.  Come back tomorrow and hopefully I will have posted that everything went great.  You can always try John’s too.

The Kaiser is napping…

We saw a parade

John and I walked over to Western & Lawrence this afternoon to hang out awhile at the German-American Fest.  We didn’t know there was going to be a big parade too, but suddenly there we were in the middle of it!  I took some pictures, I’ll post a few later.  After the parade we pigged out on brats and beer and potato salad and sauerkraut.  Mmmm… Deutschland!
