Exciting stuff (for me!)

In just a few hours here, or at least by morning, my new (old?) Demos album on Comfort Stand will be unveiled.  I’m very psyched!!!!!!!!!  Will post a link as soon as it goes live.  Davina’s artwork is just… beautiful.  Really lovely, at least I think so, and it totally "goes with" the rest of my catalog artwise.  Also, the MP3s sound amazing now, thanks to the elves at Comfort Stand who trimmed ‘n’ tucked ‘n’ squeegee’d and slapped ‘em into shape.  Of course they are demos, they don’t sound at all like I went into a studio to make ‘em, but at least the volumes are all normalized relative to each other, the 4-track hiss has been reined in a bit, some digital clicks and punch-in noises have been removed, etc. etc.  All with my hearty approval, of course.

Major hard-on

Sorry to rattle on and on about this, but ExpressionEngine is blowing my MIND, maaaan!!!  I finally happened across the Member Groups options page, and found exactly the option that I wanted in regards to comments moderation.  NOW, if you’re a member you can post comments UNmoderated.  There was also an option to disallow non-members from viewing member profiles, I turned that on too.  That makes sense, right?

At the moment I have it so’s you can join as a member (self-activated via e-mail) and start to post comments unmoderated… that is going to be abused, I just know it, so I think I’m going to start moderating MEMBERship instead.  This will at least thwart the spammers & haters who crave instant gratification.

Juggling stuff

I’ve been on the computer all day, I have so many windows open it’s not even funny.

* Yoshi’s got me beta-testing an upcoming version of his Recent Comments plugin, it works great.

* Listening to a free Josh Rouse track from the iTunes Music Store… small world, that guy came to my show in Nashville.  Wow, this is very Elliott-like.

Recent comments

We now have them, thanks to the "Recently Commented Entries" plugin by Yoshi at Psychodaisy.  Thanks Yoshi!!

Need a stylist

Is there anybody who’s good with CSS that’d be willing to try making me a new style sheet?  I SUCK at this, I’m not very good with colors and fonts and stuff.  I mean I can do it, but it’s no fun for me, kinda like sewing.  I will totally blog about how great you are if I end up using the style, and fyi: my favorite color is green with red hairs.  I mean blue!!  Blue.  ;-)

eye heart ee

Okay, I’m not nearly ready to let y’all see this, but I couldn’t stand it!  Welcome to the newly revamped and still majorly unfinished EdithFrost.com, powered by ExpressionEngine. There are broken links and boxes everywhere, so please watch your step while I get the place in order. You’ll be seeing a lot of weird default templates until I can get around to tweaking them to my own style.

Almost there

I got ExpressionEngine installed, and my old Movable Type entries are now imported, yayyyy!!!  But I didn’t do the latter without fucking hours of help from one of the EE developers, Paul/reedmaniac.  For this he deserves to get his car detailed at the very least.  I was having weirdnesses and the guy totally jumped in and got it all fixed up for me.

ExpressionEngine here I come

I’ve made up my mind… I’m going to try moving my blog to ExpressionEngine.  The Movable Type licensing hullabaloo is interesting, but as I stated before I don’t fall into the class of blogger who’d need to pony up, so what do I care really?  For me it’s all about features, about wanting to use a system that’s more powerful, more efficient, and easier to tailor to my own needs.  I’m not just a blogger, I’m a spam-hatin’ roller skatin’ record makin’ picture-takin’ scintillatin’ scotoma havin’ FOO!!  I have all these weird categories and the way you do things in MT, it’s just a pain to keep everything all tidy and easily navigable.  With EE I won’t feel so much like I’m shoehorning my data into a format that doesn’t really suit it.

Huh.

I just got an e-mail sent out to the Movable Type 3 beta-test group.  They’re very very sorry they didn’t tell us about the licensing scheme before we upgraded. They’re going to change the tiering on their licenses — they’re posting details about that later tonight — and they’re giving the beta testers some sort of price break, should we decide to take the plunge.

I haven’t jumped ship yet… still reading up about ExpressionEngine and thinking about how it might serve me better than MT, or Blosxom or WordPress (those were the other two CMSs I was seriously considering). I have a free version of EE sitting right here though, and it’s mighty tempting!  But in light of the e-mail perhaps I’ll wait another day or two and see what happens.

Expression Engine anyone?

I just downloaded my FREE copy of the very kickass ExpressionEngine CMS.  They’re giving away copies to the first 1000 people who ask, so git over there now!

If I can get it to work for me, I’m switchin’.  I think!  But omigod, am I switching?!?  Damn, this is wrapping up to be the computeriest week I’ve had in a real long time. I might as well have glued my wrists to the freakin’ laptop.

Beats the hell out of thinking about CMS’s

This P-P-P-Powerbook thread in the SomethingAwful.com forums totally sucked me in like a good movie. Start at the beginning, you won’t be disappointed even if it takes awhile to slog through.

Blogging tools

I have NOT decided to move to a new system, but I am gathering a list of other tools I want to check out.  Pipe up if you have more to add.

WordPress * Blosxom * Pivot * Drupal * ExpressionEngine * TextPattern * b2evolution * Blogger (again?) * WebGUI * PHPX * rb.log * Discloser * Dixit

Good god I’m tired

I’ve been futzing with the 3.0 beta of Movable Type for like 48 hours now. There were a lot of weird details I had to iron out and it still isn’t completely working… the worst bug is that I’m getting server errors when trying to rebuild categories. Narrowed it down to one category that wouldn’t rebuild, deleted that category and now I’m getting a different error. Ehh… I got a lot done today though, I deserve some sleep.  I think I got all the showstopping bugs out of the way at least.

And on the next day…

So, Movable Type finally broke out the new pricing scheme they’ve been threatening us with for at least a year.  Maybe I just wasn’t paying attention but I really wasn’t expecting this to happen NOW, for the SAME version I was beta-testing!  I may not have upgraded if I’d known that, but oh well, too late now.

As promised, they’ve got a free version, and as expected, the free version is not the same as the paid version.  People are FREAKING though, check out the comments on Mena’s blog. If you can pull it up that is; all their websites are getting a thrashing right now.
