Back on wheels again

So on Tuesday night Sarah calls me and says hey, do you want to go roller skating?  I’m leaving now, I’ll pick you up in 5 minutes!  And I’m all… uhhhh… FUCK YEAH!!!  So we went.  And then last night, we went again.  And tonight, we are going a 3rd time.  So now I know where the rink is and where I need to go, and I’m going to go even if Sarah gets tired of it, which I don’t think she will.  I am sooo excited and happy to be skating again!!  It used to be my Thing when I lived in Austin, I would go constantly, at least two or three times a week if not more.  When I moved to New York there was really no easy way to do it, so with great sadness I just got out of the habit of skating all the time.  But now I’m back and there ain’t no stoppin’ me.  WHOO-HOO!!!  Sarah’s cozying up with some roller-derby girls but I have no interest in that, I just want to skate for the fun of it.  Every day if possible.  YAYYYYYY!!!!!!!

Nora O’Connor - Til The Dawn

Nora OConnorI was super impressed with Nora’s performance the other night at the Lamentations / Wanda Jackson show.  I’ve sung harmonies with her a couple of times — I could tell she was really good just from that, but I’d never heard her singing on her own until this show.  One word: WOW.  And her new record really makes that voice shine.

Posted another old notebook

Today I finished entering another journal I found amongst my papers; I’ve been working on this for the past week or so but didn’t want to announce it until I was done.  This is another good one for you Edith historians (ha ha… as if!).  It starts when I first started playing at the Ships Mast open mics with Jeff Ragsdale in 1992, goes into our name-change from "Edith & Jeff" to "Edith & the Marfa Lights" and on through our first few paying gigs.  It begins on 10/12/92; if you want to read the whole thing you can start from there and go forward-forward-forward using the links on the bottom.  It ends on 5/12/93. I started another notebook shortly after that which I already entered awhile back.

Danielle Howle

I bumped into Danielle Howle after the Wanda Jackson show at Martyr’s.  She’s playing there tonight at 7PM, I think you should go.  (smile)

Rock for Kids party tonight

The second annual Rock for Kids charity auction is being held tonight at the Smart Bar here in Chicago.  I made a mix CD for this and it came out really well… maybe whoever ends up with it will give me permission to post the tracklist later, we’ll see.  Mix-makerwise, I’m in really good company just like last year!  But I just know my CD is the very best of all, because it just is.  It must be worth tens of thousands of dollars to RFK I’m sure.  Okay, a hundred bucks.  Uhhh… seventy-five?  Fifty?  Ehhh.  Any little bit will help ‘em, and I know you’ll dig my mix a lot, so won’t you place a bid pretty-please?  You don’t have to attend the party to do that; see their press stuff for more info.

Skeeter Davis (1931-2004)

We lost the great Skeeter Davis yesterday.  She influenced and inspired me more than any other country artist I can think of; I’m sure I have more of her albums than any other single artist.  I loved her and looked up to her in so many ways I can’t even express it right now… suffice it to say I will deeply mourn her loss, just like all her other fans all over the world.  Goodbye Skeeter, we’ll miss you…

A humbling experience

I sure am glad it’s today and not yesterday.  I did fine, and I was glad to get to play but… it was kinda like starting all over again as a complete nobody as opposed to somebody who’s paid her dues touring all over the U.S. and Europe, a gal who’s forty years old and has forty someodd albums listed on her discography and blah blah blah… all that is just delusions of grandeur, it ultimately means nothing; the only thing that counts is that I can still pick up a guitar and sing, and the people will clap and tell me they enjoyed the show even though they don’t know me from Adam.  That’s the kind of show I asked for though, right?  Yup, I wanted to prove to myself that I’ve still got it, and of course I do, so bring it on!

Stereo vision

Just read an interesting article on Rembrandt’s alleged lack of stereoscopic vision; supposedly it might have made it easier for him to depict a three-dimensional scene on a flat surface.  Maybe I should try doodling more often ‘cuz I have that problem too!  One of my eyes is severely astigmatic, the other is nearly perfect.  My brain only uses the good eye so I can’t perceive 3D-ness when looking at Viewmaster reels, etc.  But I reckon I must get my depth-perception somehow or I wouldn’t be able to juggle clubs without my glasses on.

Dr. Sax

Dr. Sax (a subset of the band Judah Johnson) at the Hideout in Chicago, IL

Hideout (Chicago, IL)

Solo "warm up" show from 9:30 - 10 pm at the Hideout, opening for DR SAX (AKA Judah Johnson) and Health & Beauty.  This blog post will be the only advertisement for my set, so if you’re reading this, consider yourself "in the know" and definitely invited.  :-)

The cellphone guy is SOOO pissed

So, my downstairs neighbor, the guy who talks on his cellphone without his clothes on, wants the whole world to know that he is FUCKING DISGUSTED with his cable service.  He threw a total shit-fit, he is mad as hell!  However, when they asked him to go inside and turn the box off and turn it back on, it started working again.  So he said he’d call them back the NEXT time it fucks up.

I think I have his phone number now.  What should I do?  I really want to play some prank with it but I’m not totally sure I got the number right.  Ideas?

Bjork - Medulla

MedullaJohn turned me on to this yesterday; I didn’t even realize it was out already.  I like it so far but I’m going to have to hear it a few more times before I can decide how it stacks up next to Vespertine. One thing I’d like to point out is that this is the second album in a row where Björk is showing us her armpit.  Lookin’ good!

Movie night

John and I went to see Napoleon Dynamite at the Davis tonight.  I loved it!!  Y’all already know how I feel about tall, geeky-looking guys right?  Yeah, well… I don’t wanna say it ‘cuz I’ll seem like a pervy old lady, I mean the protagonist is supposed to be in high school and all.  But yeah.  Heheh.
