Tom Paxton & Anne Hills

Eric got us into this one, thank you Eric and thank you Anne!  It was a total old-school folkie show, with Tom Paxton in his Greek fisherman’s cap and everything.  Not what I usually go out to see, but I loved every minute.  Anne played a new song she’d written called "Plainsong" which just killed me… she’s about to record a new album and that’ll be the title track.  I can’t wait to hear it.

Human and feline friends

I spent a lovely evening tonight hanging out with John.  I’m borrowing his acoustic guitar for the upcoming album recording, it’s really swell of him to loan it to me.  I also wanted to give him some CDs I’d copied for him, Apropa’t and Mañana, both by Savath & Savalas.  John’s turned me on to so much music I’m psyched to be able to let him hear something new for once!  (He’s the kinda guy who has to buy the actual CDs if he likes ‘em at all.) It sure was fun hanging out.  I got to pet the kitties as much as my allergies would allow.  John made his world famous stir-fry, did my tarot reading (which was very good and very apropos to what’s going on in my life right now), we watched some of his Diplo DVD, and I ripped a bunch of his newer CDs to my iBook.  Some Joy Zipper, Virginia Astley, Blossom Dearie, the new Fripp & Eno, a buncha stuff.  THANKS JOHN!!  That oughta last me awhile.

Stereofan

Stereofan photo gy Edith FrostI really loved the band that opened for Eric on Friday.  They’re called Stereofan and they live in New York but hail from Indiana.  It’s a guy/girl duet playing relaxed Americana type stuff… beautiful harmonies, beautiful music.  Please check ‘em out live if you get a chance, and in the meantime you can check out their video and download some of their MP3s.

Lazy Sunday

It’s been a real good weekend.  On Friday Eric had a show at Uncommon Ground, that was a lot of fun.  Then yesterday afternoon Rian came over and we ran through the songs I’m going to record in a couple of weeks for the new album.  (Mark Greenberg is going to do the engineering in his garage studio, and we’ll do the mixing at North Branch.) After that, Eric and I met up again for supper and went to see Crash at Piper’s Alley.  Loved that movie, I recommend it highly.  Today I’ve just been messing around at home, practicing and working on the computer, and of course I called my mom.  Happy Mother’s Day Mama!!  (Yes, I refer to my parents as "Mama" and "Daddy".  I’m from Texas!)

Hittin’ the town

I ventured out last night to see the Zincs open for Spoon at the Metro.  Loved the Zincs a lot, and I’m not just saying that because we share a drummer!  :-) The headliners were good too but they were pretty commercial-sounding compared to the stuff I normally listen to.  I dug their cover of Wire’s Lowdown though.  (Me to Thax Douglas: "This song is very Wire.  Man, this totally sounds like a Wire song.  You know, I think it IS!  I could swear… but they wouldn’t close their set with a cover would they? Well I may be crazy but I’m tellin’ ya, I’m pretty sure this is a Wire song.")

Saw a bunch of people I knew, so that was nice.  Elia from the Scotland Yard Gospel Choir scored me the free ticket, and a bunch of the Canasta kids were there too.  Speaking of Canasta, they’re now giving away MP3s from their sold-out first EP Find the Time. Go giddum!  "Just a Star" is the best song ever.

I got Park’d

Drawing by Laura Park

A few weeks ago, Flickr gave all us Pros two free memberships to give away.  I gave one to my pal Alyce, because she takes such pretty pictures, and the other to a gal I just met not too long ago, an artist named Laura Park.  Her drawings are incredible, you should check ‘em out.  She totally didn’t have to, but she whipped me up the above drawing as a thank-you gift.  I love it.  :-)
