2005 quick’n'dirty recap
Friday January 6, 2006 – 1:59 amCopied off my funny funny pal Amanda… a blogging meme that’s going around where you post the first line or two from the first post of every month in 2005. I had to fudge on that a little ‘cuz some of the first posts were actually pictures with no commentary.
January: I had the nicest most relaxing most low-key holiday ever! Well, I got a little homesick on Christmas Eve ‘cuz I couldn’t be with my folks down in Texas.
(Sound familiar? Well at least I had good company. And again this past Xmas, though it was… err… a bit of a different scenario.)
February: I wish I could write like Darling Nikki!! She’s writin’ frickin’ Neuromancer over there and I’m all "I like to take BATHS!" ::sigh::
(The particular post of Nikki’s that I was referring to is now riddled with spammy comments, so I’m just linking to the front page.)
March: If it weren’t for my friends, I’d truly be up shit creek right now. Thanks to them I’m hanging in there. I think it must be the hardest thing I’ve ever done, trying to recover from this evilness. I’m in a whole lot of pain.
(Uggggh… long story. A month or two before this, I started getting sick with what I thought was a superflu type bug. It was not, it turned into what was by far the worst… yes, evilness I had ever been through. It took me like six months to fully recover. I’m fine now but it was a really ghastly thing to have to go through.)
April: I just joined 43 Things, a website that’ll help me keep track of my goals and share them with others, kind of like I’m doing on Flickr with my photos. I think anybody who knows me at all would agree that I’m one of the least motivated, least goal-oriented people on earth.
(Hee… this was a bit before I jumped on the GTD bandwagon. One of my goals should have been "Do not abandon my 43 things account!”)
May: A few weeks ago, Flickr gave all us Pros two free memberships to give away. I gave one to my pal Alyce, because she takes such pretty pictures, and the other to a gal I just met not too long ago, an artist named Laura Park. Her drawings are incredible, you should check ‘em out.
(What a geekaloid, another internet-related post being posted on the internet! But at least I’m mentioning RLFs. Laura’s been a real breath of fresh air for me, I’m so glad I met her. She ended up doing the awesome artwork for my new album too.)
June: Looky what I did yesterday! I not only showed up at the courthouse, I got bloody well picked for an actual jury! So I’ve fulfilled my solemn duty and won’t have to go back for at least another year.
(That was fun. Not minute by minute, but taken as a whole it was a pretty cool experience. I was recording my new album that same week; I remember being very nervous that the trial would last longer than a day, but it didn’t.)
July: My weblogging software ExpressionEngine just got a major upgrade, so I’ve got a long night ahead of me. It’s going to take an hour just to read the changelog!
(Here we go again… Boooooring!! BOOOOOO!!! Yeah, sometimes I take a notion to just delete all these stupid upgrade notices, and blogging-about-blogging posts where I’m just huffing my own fumes. There must be dozens and dozens of them posted over the past 10 years and *nobody* cares, not even me. Though it is funny to go through the timeline…
1996: "Hand-coding SUCKS!" — 1998: "Blogger you SUCK, you ate my post, I HATE YOU!" — 2004: "Movable Type, you SUCK for dickin’ us over! I HATE YOU, I’M LEAVING!!" — 2006: Hmmm. Haven’t had anything really bad to say about EE yet, knock on wood. :-)
August: Eric took this pic today (=yesterday), of me and John Cunningham from the band Canasta… I guess this is a good opportunity to plug the fact that I sang some backup vocals for a song that’ll be on their new record We Were Set Up, coming out in October.
(This is the point in my life when some things weren’t going so great and I decided blogging about it was not the thing to do. So the whole thing turned into an infomercial for my music activities only, plus a few pictures. I’ve only recently started to really let loose with the style of blogging that made me famous. Well, "famous" circa 1997 maybe when I made "Babes of the Web", ha ha. Hoo-ee, the leches were comin’ outta the woodwork back then.)
September: I almost posted something the other day when Bush was out in California playing guitar instead of doing something about the crisis in New Orleans. But I held my tongue thinking, well, he’s a little slow, he’ll get around to it when he’s good and ready. But this is ridiculous. It’s a disgrace.
(Pfffft. If THAT was a disgrace, what do we call it now, after Rita too, now that it’s been four months and the whole Gulf Coast is an unlivable wreck? Well, not that I’ve been there to see for myself but from what I hear it could still use a lil’ work. To say the least.)
October: Overall, It’s a Game is too diffuse and uneven for casual listeners, but hardcore Bay City Rollers fans will no doubt find it to be an intriguing listen.
(Hardy-har-har… I accidentally chose the name of an ol’ BCR record to name my own 4th album. Find a PC way to insert "It’s GAY" joke here.)
November: Hey y’all, I’m back home in Chicago again, totally buzzing about what a great time I had playing with Calexico & Iron and Wine. It was so, so, SO much fun, I’m so psyched I got to do that!!
(Good times indeed. :-)
December: The first confirmations are rolling in for the US tour I’m doing with the Zincs starting on Valentine’s Day (heh - — good angle for the press).
(Yeah, real good angle Frost. Ugghhh. Back then I still had a sense of humor about it, now I’m just old and bitter and broken, trolling the personals just like the girl they think I am. Ha!! I can’t wait to get my ass outta here and on the road.)
So, that wasn’t too bad a year all in all. Personally it was very up and down. Careerwise it was great though: 2005 was for making that record. This year’s for pimpin’ it. Next year I’ll lay low and the year after that (or the year after that or that or that, judging by my track record) hopefully we can expect another one. Of course I am going to try to get it out a lot sooner than 2010, but we’ll see.
