43 Things
Sunday April 3, 2005 – 10:54 pmI just joined 43 Things, a website that’ll help me keep track of my goals and share them with others, kind of like I’m doing on Flickr with my photos. I think anybody who knows me at all would agree that I’m one of the least motivated, least goal-oriented people on earth. It’s something I really ought to work on, so if this is something that could possibly help, I should try it, right? My first goal is quite modest: "Try out 43 Things", which is a goal that 1093 other people currently share with me. Hopefully I’ll reach that goal soon, add 43 more and reach those as well, and so on.
One goal I’ve had for a long time which I’ve already achieved without the help of any stinkin’ website, is to start reading more books. I used to be such a voracious reader, but I went for a real long time — years, probably — never having completed a single book. I’d started a few but never finished them, what with the distractions of the internet, and never really having a good, clearly-delineated reading time in my day, i.e. a commute to work where there wouldn’t be much else to do but read. Anyway, last week I finished a Philip K. Dick book that I’d bought awhile back, Lies Inc. — I have about fifty of his novels (all of them except one or two) but haven’t read any of ‘em in years. It took me a week or so to get throught it — it was alright; not his best by any means but a good reintroduction. Now that I’m done with that, I started in on a new one yesterday, Pattern Recognition by William Gibson. I have a handful of his books as well, five or six I guess. What a great author… not to compare apples and oranges, but this is a much more entertaining read than the PKD one. I just started it yesterday (=Saturday) and I’m already almost halfway through, I plowed through about 150 pages!
Speaking of books, I want to join Book Crossing. I just happened upon it whilst surfing around 43 Things. Seems like lots more fun than just leaving boxes of books by the dumpster every time you move to a new apartment.

Pattern Recognition rocks pretty hard. Gibson’s weblog is sort of back in action again these days…
