A humbling experience
Saturday September 18, 2004 – 12:46 pmI sure am glad it’s today and not yesterday. I did fine, and I was glad to get to play but… it was kinda like starting all over again as a complete nobody as opposed to somebody who’s paid her dues touring all over the U.S. and Europe, a gal who’s forty years old and has forty someodd albums listed on her discography and blah blah blah… all that is just delusions of grandeur, it ultimately means nothing; the only thing that counts is that I can still pick up a guitar and sing, and the people will clap and tell me they enjoyed the show even though they don’t know me from Adam. That’s the kind of show I asked for though, right? Yup, I wanted to prove to myself that I’ve still got it, and of course I do, so bring it on!
I’m exaggerating of course; a few people showed up to see me play: Derek Becker from Satellite; my ex-boyfriend and now normal-friend John Whitney, bless his heart, and Rian Murphy and Dan K. from Drag City, bless their hearts too. Former DC employee Rebecca Berman was in town from L.A., and another ex-DCer, Lisa Turallo who’s just about to move to L.A. herself. Met a few new people too, like Walt Davis from N. Carolina and John Hasbrouck, who gave me a CD. I think that’s about it though I’m sure I’m probably forgetting somebody.
Dr. Sax was soooo good. It was the same lineup as Judah Johnson whom I saw earlier this summer, but minus the drummer. I love them a lot, I think they’re extremely talented. Can "spandau" be used as an adjective? They’re super nice guys too. Love ‘em.
The headlining band Health & Beauty thanked someone named Edith Wright, and then did it again later and no one corrected them. But that was my instant-karma payback for getting Dr. Sax’s name wrong in my own thank-yous… I called them "Dr. Jazz", but at least I did it with a huge question-mark in my voice and was immediately corrected. And I did get "Judah Johnson" right, and that’s harder! Even worse though, I saw Andrew Bird earlier that evening and accidentally called him "Dan" and couldn’t remember who Kevin O’Donnell was either even though we’d played together on Song Poem Night awhile back. How fuckin’ embarrassing. I would say I’m getting early Alzheimer’s but there’s one thing wrong with that: I’ve always been this way, I just suck with faces. And names. And… people and places, dates and times and… well, let’s face it, I’m just a retard in general. ::sigh:: I’m sure Edith Wright is better at that sort of thing than I am.

Good show! Never seen ye live before and felt lucky to get to see such a low-key show — the new songs are great.

I thought I spotted you in the crowd, I remembered you from the picture I saw on the web! But I wasn’t sure and uhh… I couldn’t remember your name. Heheh… you’re in great company though.

“Well, the more I get the more I want to see him
I page old Dr. Jazz in all my dre-ams.
When I’m in trouble, down and out,
He’s the one who can make me shout…
Hello, Central, give me Dr. Jazz!”

The Pixies were done (or was I well-done?) by 10:00pm. Wish I coulda teleported & been there to see ya. Just got back from the ACL Music Festival. Yikes, overwhelming but very well organized. Well over 200,000 attendees.
Now tell me more about this Ms. Wright. She sounds intriguing.
