No Love For Ned #200

The Zincs and I both recorded a handful of live songs on Friday for the internet radio show No Love For Ned. My segment is online this week as part of their 200th episode and I assume the Zincs’ set will show up sometime soon as well. The archives are kept online permanently, so I’ll put this post in my MP3 category. It’s not MP3, it’s RealAudio format, but whatever, I don’t have a category for non-MP3 listenables so that’s close enough.

Demos and stuff

Songs:Illinois did a post about my new record today… go over there to hear the song "Playmate" with my blessing. Craig’s a good egg, the kind of blogger who likes to ask permission before posting stuff… I’m not saying everybody’s gonna act that way but I really appreciate the consideration. So he has the edge… I hooked him up with some giveaways the ordinary joe wouldn’t be able to get his mitts on. He’s posted my ancient demo version of "Lovin’ You Goodbye", plus a cover-song demo I did with Ryan Hembrey, called "Lula Lee". It was once part of a country covers album project that never materialized. Goes along with the two cover songs that appeared at the end of my Demos album, it’s from those same sessions. Hope you like. I don’t think he keeps his songs up very long so get over there now while the post is still fresh…

I hope you like it. :-) Believe me, the actual album sounds a whoooooooole helluva lot better than this, hoo-wee! But it’s just too fuckin’ funny not to share.

Willard Grant Conspiracy – Sticky

Glitterhouse is giving away an MP3 of a Willard Grant Conspiracy track I did backups on, called "Sticky". It appears on a new best-of compilation called There But For The Grace Of God — this version of "Sticky" sounds like the version that appeared on the Color of the Sun EP, which was an alternate take of the one on the album Mojave — but the timing is different from either of those versions so I dunno, maybe this is an alternate-alternate. I’ll ask Robert the next time I catch him on IM.

I just noticed that KVRX in Austin posted a couple of MP3s from a performance I did there on 5/10/1998… "Dreamers" and "The Very Earth". I found ‘em on my own, I wonder how long they’ve been up there? I wish people would let me know about these things, jeez! It was a difficult show, I think mainly because there were no monitors or headphones. The tracks don’t sound quite as bad as I remember, though the ol’ guitar’s pretty tinny-sounding (my fault, not theirs) and I screwed up the words a little on "Dreamers" too. Ahhh… live radio, terrifying and horrible, but yet… not that bad in retrospect I guess.

Go giddum…

I also have some extra blatherings I did for this, that I didn’t bother including on the Comfort Stand page, only because Rian Murphy’s intro seemed to say everything that was really necessary. But I don’t suppose it would hurt to put them here.

Tracks 1-9 were written and recorded at home in Brooklyn and Chicago between 1996 and 2000. I sang, played guitar (a blue Stratocaster and a red Washburn acoustic), and added a bit of keyboards here and there using a Farfisa, a Roland SH-101 and a cheap Casio. The sound effects on track 7 are from the Willard Grant Conspiracy album 3am Sunday @ Fortune Otto’s.

Studio versions of these songs can be found on my albums Calling Over Time (1997), Telescopic (1998) and Wonder Wonder (2001), plus the Drag City Supersession album Tramps, Traitors and Little Devils (2001). All are available through Drag City.

Tracks 10 and 11 don’t appear on any of my albums. I recorded them in various apartments in Chicago around 2002, with the help of Ryan Hembrey on bass and piano (he of the bands Manishevitz, Central Falls, Boxhead Ensemble and Pinetop Seven), plus Jim Becker of Califone on guitar, dobro and violin, and Jim White of the Dirty Three on drums.

Bluish Bells

This is the original 4-track demo of "Bluish Bells", a song that appeared on my second album Telescopic in 1998. The demo was recorded on 9/30/1996 at my apartment in Brooklyn. I did all the vocals and played my red guitar, and added a fuzzed-out part with my blue guitar and a Big Muff. I hope you like it; it’s very different from the version you’ve (hopefully) heard already.

When The Bees Are In The Hive

This is a cover of a song by that oldtimey cowgal duo, the Girls of the Golden West. I used to have a page about them on my old site Cowgal’s Home on the Web, circa ’94 or ’95… I’m afraid there still isn’t much info about them to be found online. My version was recorded with Michael Krassner at Truckstop Audio here in Chicago on 9/27/97. I played my red guitar and did the organ part and all the vocals; Mike played guitar, and did a bass part using my SH-101 mini-synth.

The recording was done especially for a compilation called Japanese Rumba that was put out by Yakuza Magazine, which is no longer in print. However, you may still be able to order a copy of the CD by contacting its publisher Dave McGurgan.

Poor Wayfaring Stranger

Welcome to a brand new blog category I created, MP3s. Guess what it’s for? Heheh.

Debuting at number one is Edith Frost vs. Arp Destructor – "Poor Wayfaring Stranger". The song is traditional; this version was created around 1994 by Alex Morse using a home recording I’d done. I hadn’t heard it in all these years but just noticed that he posted it on HIPTINGLE last month. He never bothered to ask me how I’d feel about that, so I feel no shame in doing the same thing to him. :-P
