Rants and Raves

Got a gig in the city

A really cool thing happened today, out of the blue.  There is this lady Micki Siegel that was at that first poetry night at the Right Bank that me and Deborah sang at, and she was the main poet that we "opened" for at Biblio’s a few weeks ago.  Well, she called today to ask us (me & Deborah) to do another poetry thing.

Chapfish’s party

Note: This is a journal entry — it was written on paper or on my computer, then transferred to my website, maybe years later.

The party at Mike Chapman’s went great. We waited until Deborah got there at around 11:30 or 12:00, and we started off with our Holler Sisters act, then the band came on and we did two long sets, until 2:30 or so. People were dancing and smoking pot and having a good ol’ time. We had maybe a 5′ x 10′ area to set up but it was fine. The party was a going-away party for a guy named Dan who was Chapfish’s boss, so it was mostly work people and some neighborhood people like Garland, Heavy Metal Paul, Jessica, Diane.  I kept dedicating songs to Dan, like "Release Me" and "You’d Better Go" and "You Can Go On Your Way Now" and "Whose Shoulder Will You Cry On." It was funny and I think he really enjoyed the party, and now Mike Chapman owes me beer for life! Pretty cool!

Rockabilly rehearsal room

Jeff Ragsdale called me this morning, back from his trip to the Himalayas.  He can do the party on Friday so that’ll be fun.

I had another great rehearsal tonight with the Tailfins, albeit without drummer. We worked out a lot more songs, I showed ‘em most all the good rockin’ tunes I know. So we have a list of 15 or 20 already, we just need to hash them out right.

Monsters of the poetry nights

Note: This is a journal entry — it was written on paper or on my computer, then transferred to my website, maybe years later.

WHOAH, it’s been a busy weekend! On Sunday Deborah and I met at Biblio’s at 5:00 and it was like a bookstore with a little coffee & pastry counter and an area which they cleared away for a microphone. There were only maybe five tables in front and three or four in the back. So there were 20 or 25 people max. Sam Zanger showed up, and so did R. Deborah brought Dave and I brought D. So even though the crowd was rather bookish and couldn’t get too excited about what we were doing, we had our own contingent to make some noise. We played "Lonesome Pine Special", "Soldier & the Lady," "Lula Lee" and our new number, "I Forgot More Than You’ll Ever Know." It was my first time playing in Manhattan, so I’m glad Sam was there — he was always egging me on to do that.

Prom Queens of Poetry Night

Note: This is a journal entry — it was written on paper or on my computer, then transferred to my website, maybe years later.

Oh wow, tonight was so cool! Deborah and I decided to do the open mic at the poetry thing at the Right Bank. I played guitar, and she played ukelele on the first song. We did "Lonesome Pine Special" by the Carter Family, then "Soldier & the Lady" and "Lula Lee" by Coon Creek Girls. We had the harmonies down pretty well, and we got thunderous applause for such a small space.  Everybody was coming up to say they liked it, and me and Deborah were holding court like a couple’a prom queens.  And not one, not two, but THREE people discussed our playing at THEIR poetry nights et al.

Doing Cindy Crawford

Note: This is a journal entry — it was written on paper or on my computer, then transferred to my website, maybe years later.

I’ve been on a shopping frenzy for the past couple of days, but I hardly bought anything. I went to Macy’s and A&S Plaza yesterday looking for a Christmas dress but didn’t find anything I liked.  I did come home with the new Cindy Crawford exercise video. D. and I watched it together just to watch Cindy do her thing.  Damn, that girl is fine.  So today I went to Modell’s and got a set of hand weights, an exercise mat that rolls up real neat-like, a unitard, and sneakers, some Reebok cross-trainers.  And I came home and did Cindy’s workout and it felt real good.

Thanksgiving ’93

Last night I stayed late at work fixing up my resumé, and I’m gonna make some phone calls tomorrow to see about temping maybe.  I type 70 wpm on a slow day so I shouldn’t have any problem finding work. I could use some work in the wardrobe department though.

Later we met T. and her girlfriend G. and got takeout food from the Thai Cafe.  We had a munchout at T.’s place on Wythe & S. 4th and got some seedy pot. It’s better than the shakey weed we’ve been getting from that crazy young French fellow that hangs out at the Right Bank.

I’m in the band, I think?

Well, Mark called today and they want me to come out for a rehearsal next Wednesday at the music building (?) on 8th Ave. by the Port Authority.  I’ve heard of the place, it’s where Terri Aleo of the Crawling Kingsnakes got hit by a city truck or something and fucked her leg up real bad.  Guess I’ll be extra careful crossing the street around there!

The rockabilly audition

Note: This is a journal entry — it was written on paper or on my computer, then transferred to my website, maybe years later.

There’s all this Kennedy stuff on TV because it’s the 30th anniversary of the assassination. That was right before I was born — matter of fact, I guess I must have been conceived in November of ’63 ’cause I was born on August 18th ’64, nine months later. Whoah.

Right after work D. gave me a ride to the L-train and I trucked on over to 251 W. 30th, a studio called Legal Tender on the 8th floor for the rockabilly audition.  I had to wait a few minutes, but I got a good 30 minutes with the band. It went just fine — we did "Bang Bang" right away and made our way through "Let’s Have a Party," "Long Black Train," "Mean Mean Man" and a kickin’ "Let’s Elope Baby."

Move away from the rebbe

We had a nice lazy day today. I had to go to the doctor to get a TB test, and that was an experience in itself.  Robert T. at work came down with TB, and the health department came down last week to test everybody that worked with him, but I was out sick with a cold that day (coughing!) so they made me go on my own. I’m pretty sure I’m OK because nobody else at work tested positive, and lots of people worked more closely with the guy than I ever did.

New Brooklyn notebook

Oh boy! I love a new notebook.  This one I got at the Deli Mart on Bedford & N. 7th because it was such a Hello Kitty shade of pink.

It’s been probably six months since I’ve kept a journal — I think I was fixing to move in with D. when the last one trailed off.  Well now we’re living here quite comfortably and happily, atop the Road Tramps motorcycle club with the three cats living in peace — my Junebug and Boo Boo Kitty and D.’s Markie the Cat.  And Little Pal sleeps with us & the cats upstairs but is banished downstairs when we’re not around — he’s a cat chaser.

Isn’t this the 3rd anniversary of the day I moved to New York?  Well, I have two more pages to fill and about that much wakefulness left tonight.  I am in Packmania.  On May 3rd they came and carted off all of Bill’s stuff finally.  It ended up weighing 3500 pounds and cost him $2300.  He called tonight to say it had arrived in Austin.  So the little room which housed his stuff for a year is now being filled by my boxes as I pack my stuff to move to South 6th St.

Moving to 97 S. 6th St.

Note: This is a journal entry — it was written on paper or on my computer, then transferred to my website, maybe years later.

Well, I have big news.  I’m moving in with D., sort of.  The apartment above his opened up and I decided to take it, so we’ll have the whole building except for the first-floor garage.  D. got a price of $950 for both his space and mine, so if we split that rent, he’ll be saving $175 and I’ll be saving $225!  Of course it’ll cost money to move though.  The space is really dirty and full of wood and shit, because the last tenant was a messy painter who built his own frames (and shit).  I will have to spend some time cleaning and hauling stuff to the dump and maybe painting a little.  I like the room a lot, though.  I’m all excited and scared at the prospect of living with D. after knowing him for less than a year.  He’s scared too, but we feel real optimistic about it nonetheless.  It was just an opportunity we decided to jump on.  Really, I can’t wait.

Birth of the Marfa Lights

And I have the IRS where I want them on the 15th of April 1993, as Arthur would say.  From the 18th of August in 1964 to April 15th 1993, 28 years old so far so good (and so on).

Things are going so well I can’t believe it.  I actually got a big refund on both my NY state and federal tax returns because of the loss we took when we sold the family-property moneypit.  I’m so relieved about that — I had no idea — I thought I was going to owe a lot of money.
