Do the right thing

The last few days have been pretty rough, but it’s all stuff involving different people I’m close to, and I can’t really talk about that in detail here. But I can give you the loose overview. Last week we had some pretty bad news, which ended up resolving into good news on Monday, so that was good. A cloud of gloom was lifted, thank God. Then today (=yesterday) I got a phone call dropping three bombs on me. Bomb #1 was very bad; Bomb #2 was really really bad, and Bomb #3 was just unbearably bad. Then I got much better news which pretty much erased most of the worries about Bomb #3, so I actually felt pretty good and grateful that the thing I couldn’t bear to hear was probably not as bad as we’d thought. In fact, it’s probably nothing much to worry about at all. Bombs #2 and 3 still apply, but somehow they seem a lot more manageable in light of what could have been. So I’m glad. Life goes on.
It’s all over the news, but I guess I should post something about this so my "On This Day…" doodad will make sense next year. I was up in the wee hours on Saturday/Sunday and got early word of Saddam’s capture via a post on Metafilter. I’m glad they caught him, but I dread what’s coming next. I don’t believe in an eye for an eye. I’m afraid it’s going to be brutal, and I guess I’d just rather see him be locked up and humiliated for the rest of his life rather than killed. But maybe they won’t. If they kill him, some will consider him a martyr, and that would be bad.
Where’s Osama anyway? Sooner or later they’ll get him too I’m sure.
Last night John and I combed through our wall of CDs and pulled out a great big box-full that we can get rid of without too much heartbreak. :-) Of course all music is great music, and we enjoyed all those CDs while we had ‘em. I’d keep ‘em all if I had a gigantic house, but we’re in an ordinary apartment, drowning in piles of CDs! Gotta make some decisions, can’t keep everything just because it’s good.
I really like the show Clean Sweep, have you seen it? You should check it out sometime if ya got nothin’ better to do. It’s one of those home-improvement shows, but the kicker is that they only feature the worst of the worst packrats and clutter-junkies (like me!). They take houses completely filled with clutter, and turn them into beautiful functional homes. It’s so funny, they round up all the shit and lay it in the yard and force the owners to sort it all out into "Keep", "Toss" and "Sell" piles. Then they throw a yard sale, it’s great fun.
Went back today (=yesterday) for the 2nd half of my deep-cleaning. I’m a little sore now — I definitely got worked over but it doesn’t hurt, not like the last time. Then again, last time I had a tooth about to die on me! My whole mouth was throbbing for weeks, and I blamed it on the deep-cleaning but in reality it was because of that bum tooth. I’m going back after the holidays to get that root canal re-filled by the way. I wasn’t aware of this at the time, but he’d used a temporary filling, in case I had any more problems. Everything’s fine now, so it’s time to put in the "real" filling. I still need to get it crowned at some point, but that can wait a little while longer. Right now my money still needs to go towards my gums, but thankfully the worst of that’s over too!
Gawd, is it Wednesday already? The week’s been slipping by so fast I had no idea. I wish John had another long weekend coming up, it was so great having all that lounge time!
Alyce came over on Saturday, we ordered pizza and watched some Chris Cunningham videos on a DVD she had. Always fun hanging out with her. I showed her some episodes of Mr. Show as well, she hadn’t seen it before.
We had an awesome Thanksgiving! Made our own turkey feast with all the fixin’s. I took it upon myself to do the carving this time, and didn’t screw it up. Today (=yesterday) was real lazy, John worked on music and I messed around on the computer and jammed MP3s on the stereo. We ate more turkey and did a ton of dishes. I helped Soren fix his RSS feed too… just barged in and said "gimme your password" and there was little he could do but comply. Now it works in NetNewsWire like all good feeds should, and I don’t have to check it by hand anymore.
For years I’ve been collecting a lot of crazy clip-art, saving stuff I find on the web and scanning pics from my own collection of mostly cowgirl-related paper stuff — calendars, magazine covers, matchbooks, postcards, Valentines, whatever! I like to display the pics as rotating desktop backgrounds / tiles which change every half-hour or so. I’ve been trying to get them a little more organized, but the built-in wallpaper changer in Panther doesn’t search subfolders; you can only give it one folder and have it choose pictures from there. So I’ve been using this freeware utility called ChangeDesktop, which gives you lots more options, including subfolders. One more option it gives you is the ability to upload your pictures to the web as they’re changing, so everyone can see what’s on your desktop. I set it up to work on my server, but the question is, would anybody make use of it?
Dirty rotten spammers! Now they’ve found a way to hack into Movable Type. It involves the mt-send-entry script, which allows people to send copies of a blog post to anyone they want. Three guesses what they’re doing with it! Of course they’re using it to send their filthy spam to whoever they want, right from your server. So if you’re using MT, go into your cgi bin and delete that thing right now until they post a fix! If you’re using that feature, get rid of it for now. It’s not safe. If you’re not using the feature, you won’t break anything by deleting the file.
I feel a zillion times better today. Yay for antibiotics!! No pressure, no pain whatsoever, just a slight you’ve-been-fucking-with-me feeling around the tooth that had the root canal.
As God is my witness: I will be a good girl from now on. I’ve wasted several of my lovely pearlies but I will try my best to save the rest and keep them happy from now on. I will undergo the 2nd half of the scaling treatment, though it shall be painful, it is for the best. I will return for cleanings just as often as my dentist tells me to. I will floss daily and brush my teeth more than once a day. Amen, roger, over and out!!
Forget what I said before, I want a root canal, right now! The sooner the better! The pain has escalated all day today, and has narrowed down to one tooth throbbing like a mofo and screaming in protest when I dare to bite down. Plus another one in the back which isn’t too happy, but mostly this one in the front. I had called the dental office around 3pm but they were already closed for the weekend. So I waited a few hours and then did the unthinkable, I called my dentist AT HOME. He was so nice… I’m meeting him at his office in the morning, on a Saturday! Whoo-hoo!!!! I don’t know what I would’ve done if I’d had to wait until Monday. Now I just gotta get through the next fifteen or so hours. All I got is 200mg Ibuprofin, it ain’t cuttin’ it. AAiiiiiieeeee!!!!
My mouth has been hurting for freakin’ weeks!! I think it’s just a bad case of sore gums and achey teeth, from the 3 new fillings, the cleaning and the 1/2-mouth scaling I got. My jaws hurt too, from all the Novocaine shots. It’s nothing too serious, just annoying… I’ve had teeth really die on me before and the pain was always a hell of a lot more intense than this. Usually by the time you really need a root canal, you’re in so much pain you’re beggin’ to get it done ASAP!! So thank god this is nothing that bad, it’s just annoying like I said.
