CSS devolution
Friday February 28, 2003 – 4:46 amI’m tired of being annoyed by the problems with my site’s front page layout. All this one-column two-column crap is really chappin’ my ass, man. It’s bullshit!! I know my HTML; I am the table queen! So I’m going back to tables now for the layout of this page. They’re what I’m comfortable with; I know they work. I can code the thing by hand and I know how it’ll look before I even hit ‘refresh’. I can still use the style sheet for the fonts and colors, but no more for the layout. At least not until the rest of the world realizes what a non-standards-compliant piece of crap IE is.
It’s annoying that Movable Type doesn’t provide any default styles that DON’T use a two-column CSS layout. They don’t even use CSS to layout their own homepage, fer cryin’ out loud! It’s fine for the users but not good enough for their own page, harrumph.
It’ll take me awhile to make adjustments on the template and in the style sheet. Might take all night. So… I’ll post a comment when I’m done, and once again I’ll be asking y’all to check my work and report back any weirdnesses. Thanks so much for your patience and your help with troubleshooting! Like I said, it’s bullshit, y’all shouldn’t even have to be hearing about this.

The basic layout’s done, does it look wacky for any of you? Does it respond as you’d expect when you stretch and shrink the browser window? I have to fool with the colors somewhat but at least the columns should be fixed for everyone.

Well, Netscape isn’t faultless either… it has loads of other compliances issues…. but you are on a mac as well, so things might be a little different on that side of the divide….
But now you can make the window very wee, and it still stays in two columns…

I doubt the left and right columns are supposed to be separated by a 2" blue bar, but that’s how it renders here on Chimera (the gecko engine OS X browser you should be using if you aren’t).

My regular readers know I use Chimera. ;-) I don’t know why there’d be a blue bar, I sure don’t see that. I’m using the nightly build from a few days ago. I’m testing it on an iBook running Jaguar at 8×6 resolution, with Safari, IE, Chimera and OmniWeb. On the PC with high-resolution monitor, it looked fine but I only tried IE.

Hmmm, it seems to have fixed itself - maybe I only got a partial page or something. Sorry for the false alarm!

Well I’ve been tweaking little things here and there, so god knows. Save your bug-ticket, you’ll prolly need it again later. ;-)

Eda,
I’m now seeing two columns. Thanks! I missed being able to click on "recent comments" and am glad they’re back. I have lines like this - - - - - around each of the blog entries. Don’t know if that’s how it’s supposed to be or not. But everything reads perfectly so thanks!
Love you!

Yayyy!!! If it works for you then it also works for a bunch of other people too, so… cool.
