Ahoy there! An art teacher of mine put the song "Temporary Loan" on a mix for me and I fell in love with it and went out and purchased "Calling Over Time", which I also loved. It wasn’t until now, a few months later, that I finally got the time to look you up online. Anyways, I like the site, and have to start out by asking, what did you wear for Halloween? Also, I found a The Flaming Lips mentioned a couple times - what other kind of music do you listen to? Finally, when do you think you’ll be coming to Massachussetts? I’d like to see you in concert. Well, that’s enough blab out of me. Thanks!

P.S.> I just picked up on the title of your thread - an Elvis Costello reference perhaps?

The title of the thread? This thread? It’s titled "Davina as Frida Kahlo" because my friend Davina dressed up as Frida Kahlo, as you can see from the photo. I didn’t go to that party and didn’t get dressed up as anything. I don’t know when I’ll be touring at this point. And, I listen to all kinds of music, especially the old kind. :-)

Hmm… I’m stupid… I was really tired when I made those last posts, and for some reason I thought the words "This Year Model" were the thread title… So that’s why I asked about Elvis Costello, because of his album by the same name. Sorry to sound like an idiot :) ! By old kind do you mean classical? Or like, 50’s rock? I guess a better question are who are your biggest influences?

Oh, I should have realized that. I guess THAT post was an Elvis Costello reference! That, and the fact that I thought I had another pumpkin photo from years past, but then I couldn’t find it.
I don’t think I have any classical records. By "old" I mean almost anything from before the year I was born (1964)… I like very early 19-teens pop stuff like Billy Murray; oldtimey blues, jug and string bands; very early country stuff like Jimmie Rodgers; 1940s western swing and jumpin’ jazz; 1950s rockabilly; 1950s and 60s novelty music like Nervous Norvus and Floyd Robinson. I also like a lot of what you’d call incorrect music, especially the older stuff like Florence Foster Jenkins and Leona Anderson, and any music performed by ventriloquist’s dummies. I collect a lot of classic country female singers like Bonnie Guitar, Skeeter Davis, Norma Jean, Bonnie Lou, Jean Shepard, et al. Also like French pop music from the 50s and 60s, i.e. Francoise Hardy, Brigitte Bardot. Love some 1970s West Coast singer-songwriters like Margo Guryan and Judee Sill. Love antique Hawaiian music, and oldtimey blues musicians like Blind Blake, and some more current blues, i.e. Jessie Mae Hemphill and T-Model Ford. I like girl groups, and brother/sister acts that use close harmony i.e. the Caravelles, Patience & Prudence, the Wilburn Brothers, the Davis Sisters, the Girls of the Golden West, the Coon Creek Girls. I like anything that appeared on Ralph Records in the 1980s, especially Renaldo & The Loaf. I like Gillian Welch and Danielle Howle. I like a lot of 80s bands like the Cocteau Twins, Talk Talk, Gina X, Flying Lizards. I’m obsessed with Wire. Bjork’s cool. I could go on and on and on! But I have no idea how these things might influence my own music, somebody else would have to be the judge of that.

Wow! Thanks a lot for that comprehensive list :) I always find it interesting to hear what musicians that i like think about other musicians and bands and such. I like how with Bjork you simply state that she’s cool, because the simplicity of that statement implies so much that is just understood. Did you see her in concert this summer? I waited seven hours to get front row in Boston, it was amazing :)
