Firefox redux
Thursday June 3, 2004 – 7:15 pmI’m trying out the Firefox browser on OS X again… last time was almost a year ago, when it was still called Firebird. The OS X version was so buggy at that time I couldn’t stick with it, but for the life of me I can’t remember what problems I had. Wish I’d been a little more forthcoming in my blog post about it so I could see if they’ve fixed whatever it was that I found lacking. Haven’t noticed any defects in 0.8, but I have an unusual talent for unearthing bugs, so it’s probably just a matter of time.
I wonder why this is still in the "Technology Preview" stage? At this rate I guess we can expect a 1.0 version two or three years from now. But who cares what they call it; on most platforms it works like a dream. I wouldn’t use anything else on Windows or Linux.

Um, self? You *did* describe your problems very precisely, only it was in the comments rather than the post itself. RTFC next time!

I love Firefox for Windows! Even though it still has some display issues. But the tabbing makes up for it.

I *never* had any problem with the Windows version, I even got my mother hooked on that. :-)
Just tried replicating the old bugginess in OSX and couldn’t. Yay!! But reading that old blog post reminds me that I need to get the trackbacks blended back in with the comments, otherwise it looks like I’m replying to nothing…

I was using the OS X Firefox for a while, but stopped after it kept screwing up the login page of Google AdSense. It asks you for your username and password, but when you submit it with Firefox, it keeps reloading the same front page! It never lets you in. So that was enough for me to axe it and try something else.

Have you tried Shiira? It uses the WebKit rendering engine but a lot of people seem to really like how it handles tabs. The guy from Hicksdesign quite likes it, so he made a button set for it to replace the ugly defaults. Give it a try if you’re still in the market for another new browser.

Firefox/OSX bug discovery #1: my toolbar bookmarks disappeared after a few cycles of sleep/wake. Oh, they were there in the bookmarks, and the toolbar itself was being displayed, but no bookmarks were showing on it. If I went to the “customize toolbar” panel and hit “Restore default set”, I would see the phrase “Bookmarks Toolbar Folder” appear on the left-hand side of the toolbar. But when I hit “Done”, the phrase disappeared and it was blank again. Restarted the browser and they’re showing up as normal again.
