For y’all’s information
Saturday May 29, 2004 – 10:40 pmI started allowing HTML in comments, just so’s you know. I mean, screw it. I get notified of all comments anyway, and I can spot the bad stuff just as easily in HTML as I can in plaintext. Unlinked URLs are automatically converted to links also, so there will be no more cutting and opening a new window and pasting and hitting "enter", thank you very much.
I’m still waiting for the other shoe to drop comment-wise. I shouldn’t say this out loud but I haven’t gotten a single comment spam yet, using EE!! I’m so used to getting pummelled by that shit under MT. Maybe it’s just because Google’s still confused as to the whereabouts of my archive pages… spammers are always going for the older pages, especially the ones they can get to by looking up words like "comments" and "guestbook". I dunno though, EE has lots of built-in protection that you can’t get in MT without serious hacking. I turned on all those security features except for the CAPTCHA images. So I guess it’s working!
Nobody’s abused the membership system yet either. I edited the terms-of-service thingy the other day, to put in a HUGE warning about spammers and scammers and trolls and other assorted dipsticks. It’s pretty funny, I’m all "You don’t wanna MESS with me man, I am CRAZY!!!" I guess I kinda went overboard on that, it’s probably not even necessary. I mean, even without a scary TOS, no spammer or troll is going to be too surprised when their account gets yanked for bad behavior.
I finally started playing with one of the very basic features in EE, sub-templates. It’s easy as pie! It works kinda like xSSI wherein you have snippets of code you can use globally inside your templates, like for footers and nav-bars or anything else you’d want to use on multiple pages. You could do that in MT as well, it’s a pretty basic feature of most content management systems. So, I know how to do it now… I still have a lot of futzing to do with these snippets, but I’m getting there.
I really want to encourage my regular readers to join as members of this site. My insatiable ego demands this. So I’m starting to narrow down what "guests" can see versus what members can see. Nothing really phenomenal yet; I don’t want to restrict content so much as features. So far I only have the avatar thing goin’ on, but I’m making one other change: anything that’s strictly member-related, like the list of who’s online and the member stats, will now only appear if you’re logged in as a member. I know… WHO CARES EDITH??? But whatever. I just think it’s cool when people join, and I want to reward them for their coolness somehow, by giving them more shit to play with. And one day maybe I’ll come up with something that’s actually FUN. :-)
