From France to Chicago
Thursday March 24, 2011 – 1:03 pmIn the summer of ’98 when I was living in Chicago, I got to be friends with the amazing French singer Dominique A. We’d been jabbering about music and I complained that I didn’t know French music well enough. So he made me two mixtapes on cassette and sent them to me in Chicago. Hence the title. :-)

Okay so I realized I actually met him BEFORE the summer of ’98 but who’s counting.

I do count (just a bit :-) 1998 was a good year ! (at least for your French fans ;-) I must say he did these cassettes with a lot of taste, but well : he is Dominique A…

I really appreciate the effort and it really paid off, because these 2 cassettes got played a million billion times. All these songs led to so many further discoveries. Every time I went on tour we had the tapes in rotation, so my bandmates know all the songs too. Of course he didn’t include his own music or Francoiz’s, but we added those records on our own. :-)
I must have made cassettes for Dominique in return, but I can’t remember what I put on them! But I was always anal about writing down what I gave to people so I wouldn’t give them the same thing twice. I have a folder full of mixtape lists, maybe it’s in there. I would go through and scan them but I don’t want people to find out that I was giving everyone basically the same mix with one or two songs changed. ;-)
