I have switched to Linux
Tuesday July 29, 2003 – 1:00 pmHey, I installed RedHat and it totally works!!! Except I can’t update my packages ‘cuz their site seems to be completely kaput at the moment. But I’m here aren’t I? So I must be on the internet right? I’m so glad everything went so smoothly and it let me surf the ‘net right out of the box. Boy, I remember the days. It was never this easy back then. For starters I would’ve had to work pretty hard to get anything USB working — gawd!! — and I used to be on a modem — eek!!!!!!!
Well, I just woke up John with my silent shrieking. It’s almost four in the morning so I’m gonna play around for TEN more minutes and then get me some sleep. I thought I’d be up all night for sure, what a relief! I’m a rocker you know. So this is only a little past my normal bedtime, it isn’t even close to being up all night for me. Up all night means I go to bed at 9 or 10 in the morning.
I am well pleased. Gonna go exploring now. Whoops, RedHat’s working again! So I guess I’ll update them packages. Back in the… uh… morning.

Uh oh… I think I accidentally plumb forgot about John’s bookmarks. That was the one thing. I think I got everything else, but fuck!! I don’t think he’ll be too mad, but I’m mad at myself for sure.

Congratulations! :) RH 9 is wonderfully easy to set up — most everything works out of the box, so setting up desktops (and even some servers) with it has become an automated process for me. I’m still a bit tetchy about the interface, though — the infamous Bluecurve, which I’ve been trying to get rid of. (Metacity, the underlying window manager, is too minimalist for me, but anytime I install another WM it breaks too many things.)
Red Hat’s built-in updater pretty much sucks. It works, but since it defaults to the RH site, the free servers of which are usually overloaded, it sometimes takes days to get updated (especially when a new major security patch comes out). Just for pure updates, I use Ximian’s Red Carpet (http://www.ximian.com/products/redcarpet/), which is free, offers a bunch of mirrors, and has all the Red Hat updates (I’m just wary to use their GNOME packages, since they tend to fuck with the ones set up on RH.)

Thanks Rob! I’m really excited. I’m definitely going to stick with RH for now so I can get used to using Linux again. Now that I have all my files off the computer it’ll be a snap to switch to something else if (when) I decide to.
John wasn’t mad about the bookmarks. He said… ‘eh… no big johnson!’ lol
