Jolie Holland
Thursday June 24, 2004 – 11:00 amLaunchcast turned me on to an artist I’d never heard before that I really really dig. Jolie Holland. It’s beautiful country bluesey jazzy stuff. I have to buy her records now (Catalpa and Escondida), and I highly recommend ‘em to y’all as well. It’s sort of along the lines of Karen Dalton (who I also love) but the singing’s a little more delicate.

That’s so cool! I just ordered them both yesterday after listening to the Escondida promo I’ve had for months. She’s playing an Empty Bottle sponsored gig at the Open End Gallery so get off your butt and go see a show!

Huh? What are you talking about, it isn’t listed on her calendar.

Her calender is woefully out of date. Check the Bottle’s calender for July 31st. It’s considered a hot ticket.

I LOVE THE BE GOOD TANYAS!! But she wasn’t in that, was she? I thought they were from Canada, and Jolie’s from GOD’S COUNTRY. Texas. Like me. :-)

From All Music.com about BGT’s:
The group came together when Samantha Parton, who had spent her post-high school years traveling with her guitar (drawing strong musical influence from visits to the Southern U.S.), returned to Vancouver. She and Jolie Holland formed the group, then Parton hooked up with Frazey Ford and Trish Klein while planting trees in Nelson, British Columbia. (Ford and Winnipeg-native Klein had met at Selkirk Music School in Nelson.) The musicians played together for the first time in 1999, busking outside the Lilith Fair venue in Vancouver. They soon moved on to local thrift store and coffee shop gigs. Holland left the group and the remaining trio was soon touring Canada and released their debut album, Blue Horse, in 2001. Two years later, the ladies returned with the light-hearted sophomore effort Chinatown.

and as a good canadian boy I guess I should mention (just in case those that don’t know) that Be Good Trish Klein also has a side project out under the name of "Po’ Girl" (http://www.pogirl.net/) that is also worth a good listen.
