MT 2.63
Sunday February 23, 2003 – 10:36 pmJust re-re-re-upgraded my Movable Type install to the latest version, 2.63. No security warnings this time, just some bug-fixes. Speaking of bugs, I wonder why it hasn’t been sending me copies of y’all’s comments? I’m only seeing them when I actually visit my own site, which I don’t usually do unless I’m looking for something (like comments!).

Go to you blog config and check that the "email new comments" option is selected. I noticed that it had been unchecked on my own weblog and couldn’t figure out how to reproduce this problem — so perhaps it is a bug.

You almost gave me a heart attack, I can’t believe you’re reading my blog. I think your program is awesome. The comment-mailing is working again and I don’t know why because the option was always checked. Maybe it occasionally times out trying to reach my mail server or some such b.s.

I meant to say ’sendmail’, not ‘mail server’. You knew what I meant. :-)

Thanks for the compliments about Movable Type. I hope I didn’t crush your opinion of me being an untouchable developer ;)
This just goes to show — you appear on the recently updated list, and I’m bound to read you — whatever that’s worth.
I’m glad to hear that the box has always been checked and I hope the wonkiness with your mail server gets worked out.

Yes Matthew, and it’s scary. I regard it as malicious hacking, which is kinda the same way I feel about e-mail spam. For those of you that might not get it, it’s not a human being doing the posting, it’s a script, a robot. They’re finding any message board via Google that allows public comments, and posting their little spam-link anywhere they can. I was right there when the first one came in — I was composing the first ‘fuck off’ reply and hit refresh, and it had already posted a second one identical to the first. At that point I banned the originating IP number using that feature in Movable Type — thank god for that feature!! Of course that’s no permanent solution, and it only works if you’re lucky enough to catch them in the act as I did. Well, I’m not sure that the script would have continued posting more than that but it’s great that I could ban it right away to prevent having to remove the same comment from a thousand fucking posts or however many I have.
I think there might be a couple more examples of this buried in my comments here but I can’t be 100% sure who-all is a real human and who isn’t. If this phenomenon starts to be a huge problem it’ll sure make bloggers think twice before enabling public comments. Which would be a shame because I know there’s lots of times that I’ve refrained from commenting on something because I didn’t want to take the time to get a username and pick a password etc.
