New album coming soon
Wednesday August 17, 2005 – 10:40 pm
Today’s my 41st birthday! And, not that one has anything to do with the other, but the time is finally right to talk a little bit about my new album It’s a Game. It’s going to be released on CD and LP, on November 15th if all goes as we hope, or even if it doesn’t! On Drag City of course, catalog # DC301. What you’re lookin’ at up there is some proposed poster art, not the cover — I’m keeping that under wraps until we get it all finalized, but you’ll see it soon enough. That poster photo was taken by Eric Ziegenhagen just last week at the Palmer House downtown — it got dolled up and pinkified by Dan Osborn, who’s doing the album layout like he’s done for all my rekkids.
This is my fourth album and I’m extremely proud of it. It’s taken me forever to get it out to you — my last album came out in 2001 — but I wanted this one to be really good, and it sure is. I’ve already talked about the recording somewhat here on my blog, but for those who are new here, the album was produced by Rian Murphy, who also produced my first and third albums Calling Over Time and Wonder Wonder, and the EP Love Is Real. We recorded about half the songs at Mark Greenberg’s studio Mayfair Recordings (with Mark engineering) and the other half at North Branch (with Mark and Barry Phipps engineering). It was masterfully mastered in Phoenix (like yesterday) by Roger Seibel at SAE.
I’ll give a more complete instrumentation list later on, but for now, the musicians who helped me out on this album are, in alphabetical order by first name: Azita Youssefi (AZITA); Dave "Max" Crawford (Poi Dog Pondering); Emmett Kelly; Jason Toth (Manishevitz, The Zincs); John Hasbrouck; Josh Abrams (Town & Country); Lindsay Anderson (L’Altra); Mark Greenberg (The Coctails); Rian Murphy (Chestnut Station) and Ryan Hembrey (Manishevitz, Can.Ky.Ree etc. etc.). See, we started out to make a very stark album, but… one thing led to another I guess…!
Tracklist time.
1) Emergency
2) It’s a game
3) What’s the use
4) A mirage
5) Playmate
6) My lover won’t call
7) Lucky charm
8) Larger than life
9) Just a friend
10) If it weren’t for the words
11) Stars fading
12) Good to know
13) Lovin’ you goodbye
Anyway, suffice it to say I AM SO EXCITED!!! I CAN’T WAIT!!! I’ll be touring to support the album too of course, but not until after it’s been out a month or three. Don’t wanna be on the road during the holidays y’see.
More tidbits later…

Happy, happy (well, I know ya don’t wanna be "too" happy) B’day. I’m really glad to see two new faves of mine, "It’s A Game" and "Lucky Charm" among the songs! Those early versions of "It’s A Game" you sent me have five stars on my own private iTunes heap o’tunes. Rian was right to want "It’s A Game" on your new album. It’s also a great title for the whole thing. It just could be your big crossover hit to land you above the radar, but of course guesses like this don’t amount to much more than wishful pretending – besides, bigtime fame isn’t the name of the game, anyway. And, of course, everyone knows it’s a game. But today really IS a beautiful day for ice cream, so have your favourite with that birthday cake. 41′s good – you’re a year over that imaginary big deal of turning 40.

You haven’t been east since September 2001, just after 9/11 you played at T.T.’s in Cambridge, a block from my home-away-from-home on Auburn Street.

Hi Edith.
I don’t know if you check your PMs on Audioscrobbler (or Last.FM as it is now) but I sent you one a few weeks ago. As promised, a track of yours is being played on my internet radio show (Brierly Hill 90210) all this week. You can check it out at http://www.live365.com/stations/323450 if you like. There’s also an Autumn Thieves track this week who I know (from Last.FM) that you like.
Any-hoo, happy (belated) birthday and I’m looking forward to the new album. I’m sure I’ll be plugging it on the air!

Thanks Jon… I don’t remember Autumn Thieves, that must be one of those batches of songs I got off somebody’s MP3 blog. Most new music I hear goes in one ear and out the other, oh well.

Which may be a good thing Edith… it let’s your own genius shine through. ;)
August 24th, 2005 at 2:05 pm
congrats on the birthday … you’re still almost 3 behind me … and hopefully you won’t catch up anytime soon.
Great news on the new album and a way swank poster.
But as to these wimps asking you to tour the East and West Coasts … feh! I want you to tour New Zealand! Now that would be an impressive level of commitment to your fans … or at least a fan. :-)
I’ll be there in about two weeks. It’ll probably be a while before I get out and take some new pics, but I’ll be sure to let you know. And I’ll email the views from my apartment — you’ll be so jealous!
