New Years in Billyburg
Saturday January 2, 1993 – 1:30 pmNote: This is a journal entry — it was written on paper or on my computer, then transferred to my website, maybe years later.
Tonight’s my first paying gig ever, so I’m relaxing by myself for awhile — I want to take a nap in a little bit. Jeff and I went through all the songs earlier today and it all sounded fine. Hope I didn’t wear out my voice. It should be really fun tonight. I wonder if anybody from work will show up, that would be fun to show off in front of them. I would get a kick out of it if Melanie B. would come especially. Because I think she would genuinely be into that sort of music.
New Years with D. was the best funniest most pissa New Years I ever had! God, lemme think. D. had to work on New Years Eve til 3 p.m., and we met afterwards and did laundry. Then we went home and took a nap and made love. We took some shots of Wild Turkey before going to the Thai place for pad thai. NO. We went straight from laundry to the Thai Cafe, then we went home. Okay. So the Thai place was especially wonderful because we sat at the counter and got to watch + be served by the cooks themselves. And they broke out champagne for everyone, it was great. So after the nap we do more Wild Turkey and head to the Mast where Wild Bill presides ’cause it’s a Thursday. He didn’t even see me and I didn’t want to sing. I was too crocked. There was champagne and kisses with D. at midnight, lots of noisemakers and ribbons flying and merrymaking. I had a pint of Bass and champagne there. Everyone was saying Happy New Year and kissing each other.
Soon after, Diane and Barbara, her friend from London, and D. and I went to my place to smoke a joint. When we went back, the vibe was weird so we decided to go to the Right Bank. Good idea. There was music in the new back room, Doug was playing guitar and the Kelsey-Grammer-lookalike singer from Colored Greens was on the mic. Judy and Greg from my building were there — Judy had on a blonde wig. Jeremy was there with Annette, and Jessica was there, and Lisa Jane at the bar, and R. and Steve and Mike Chapman and the Evil Elizabeth. D. and Veron were there — did I tell you me + D. ate dinner at Veron’s house the other day?
D. introduced me to a lot of people at the Right Bank. It used to be his hangout more than the Ships Mast.
So we went back home and I had some Baileys and was really crocked. We made love again though!
D. left around noon and I practiced a little and stuff. We got together again later and went into the city to cop and eat at Kiev. Came home to my place and took an overly long nap. Woke up at 11:00 when Jessica called. D. was still asleep while I talked to her. When he woke up we were both BORED and pissy and cold, so we went to the Ships Mast. Good idea. I sat there and talked to Godfrey Daniel. Turns out he lived in San Antonio and knows all these people I do, like John M., who I hadn’t thought about in ages!
Okay, I just got John M’s number from information and called him up. Blast from the past!
I have to take a nap now.
