No more Mystery Songs, oh well
Monday July 21, 2003 – 5:56 amLast week’s Mystery Song was "Don’t Stop The Music" by Sixten Jansson, and with that I say adieu to this particular category in my blog. I haven’t been personally hassled by anyone, I’ve just thought about it and decided that now is is a pretty good time to stop. It takes tons of bandwidth that I should be saving for my own music, and it’s a legally questionable thing to do, obviously. But more than anything I need to cut down on distractions as much as possible, so I can work more on my own music. I am going to continue giving away some of my tunes here; they’re my recordings and that’s my choice. But I don’t want them be republished elsewhere without my permission, and I must reluctantly conclude that I should follow the golden rule and do the same for other musicians, and the labels (or thugs) they choose to work with. Even the out-of print stuff isn’t really mine to give away. So… one less thing to worry about, one less mixed emotion for me!
For reference, here’s the complete list of all the Mystery Songs I’ve shared.
Sorry but I can’t send you a copy of any of these songs, so please don’t ask!

Ah, well… it was good while it lasted. Too bad I didn’t discover this little treasure trove before February. (I’m still wondering what Sparkle Moore sounded like — maybe Wanda Jackson? Maybe not. There’s probably only one Wanda!)
I’m sure your choice of "Don’t Stop the Music" to, um, stop the music was carefully considered as providing the maximum irony quotient, as well as a trenchant political statement.
Thugs, indeed!
Peace,
Steve

I am searching for the song, "The world owes me a living," from the Disney movie about the grasshopper and the ants.
I would like to get a copy of this song or the words.

I am looking for the lyrics from a George Jones song that was titled "Eskimo Pie" The lyrics will be for my own private use and will not be copied without permission. I believe the song came out in 1960-61 and was on his album; The Novelty Side of George Jones. If you can send it I’ll love you.

Ha! I know it like the back of my hand. I’ll send it over to you by e-mail. :-)

You know what, I thought about this all day and here’s the deal: I gotta put the kibosh on sending people lyrics and MP3s if I don’t own the copyright. Quoting full lyrics is not part of what would fall under the blanket of fair-use, which I agree is bullshit, but… people are googling up my pages like you did — not just this one but others too. They are finding my pages, they are posting comments asking me for lyrics and/or MP3s, and although I really want to be able to give them *everything*, in fact it’s a violation of the terms of service for my mail provider (Gmail) and my webhost too. No distributing of any copyrighted materials unless I own ‘em. So… I really apologize but I gotta say no, from now on. I’m risking losing my account(s) if I do, and there’s no need for that, especially when the song in question is *in print* so you can buy it on Amazon and have a copy for yourself. Sorry man… really.

Edith,
I hope you can help me. I am trying to locate a copy of Huggin’ and Chalkin’ for a friend of mine’s father. Perhaps you could e-mail me a copy if you still have?
Thanks,
Kim

Sorry to repeat myself but please read the comment I posted on 8/01… I can’t be in the business of sending out MP3s to random people googling up my pages. Check iTunes, there are 2 versions of that song downloadable. The Hoagy Carmichael one is on at least one compilation, the one called "Mairzy Doats: 44 Wacky Hits" — no longer in print but probably findable on eBay or GEMM. It may be on other comps as well, it would just take a little searching around.
