Question for Mac browser geeks
Friday July 9, 2004 – 6:56 pmRob? I mean, whoever? In OS X is it possible to create a bookmarklet (favelet) on one’s desktop? They work fine for me inside my browser toolbar, but I can’t seem to drag those little things to my desktop. Any bookmark with an ordinary http: URL works fine; I drag it to the desktop and a .webloc file is created. But when I do the same thing with a bookmarklet, which begins with javascript: instead of http:, the resulting file is a clipping of the text of the bookmarklet, rather than a .webloc file. Does OS X even have a built-in handler for a javascript uri? I couldn’t find anything when I looked for it using RCDefaultApp.
The reason this all started is because I switched from using LaunchBar to Quicksilver. Which I love, except that bookmarklets in QS get launched in Safari instead of my default browser (Firefox), it’s a little annoying. To be fair, it doesn’t work in LaunchBar either — when I try to launch a bookmarklet in that, I get an alert box that tells me OS X doesn’t recognize internet addresses starting with "javascript:". Which made me open up the Default Apps pane, and blah blah blah…

P.S. Testing different browsers. In Camino an .inetloc file is created when you drag a javascript bookmarklet from the toolbar to the desktop. But when you click on it, you get a Finder error that says no application was found to open the Internet location file.

I’ve never thought about this problem before — I keep as little on my desktop as possible. But I’ll play around with different browsers and see if it makes a difference.

Sorry for the off-topic comment, but I don’t know how to contact you….I’ve been enjoying your blog. I’m a total newbie at tech but considering EE for a more robust version of my current blog–but this one would be directed at resources for helping kids make a difference. Who do you you use to host your blog and how much “space” do you require at that host for this blog? Do you ever make yourself available for freelance work? Best, a new fan in Chicago.

This is how you contact me, ha ha. I haven’t freelanced in awhile though I guess I could if I had to. But EE is super easy to install! You need a host running Apache and MySQL. I use ICDSoft as my host; they give me a little over 300 megs, but I fill it up with a lot of pictures, videos and mp3s… the blog itself takes maybe 20 megs.
