Question for Mac browser geeks

Rob?  I mean, whoever?  In OS X is it possible to create a bookmarklet (favelet) on one’s desktop?  They work fine for me inside my browser toolbar, but I can’t seem to drag those little things to my desktop.  Any bookmark with an ordinary http: URL works fine; I drag it to the desktop and a .webloc file is created.  But when I do the same thing with a bookmarklet, which begins with javascript: instead of http:, the resulting file is a clipping of the text of the bookmarklet, rather than a .webloc file.  Does OS X even have a built-in handler for a javascript uri?  I couldn’t find anything when I looked for it using RCDefaultApp.

WTF Apple?!?

I just talked to AppleCare again, they got the laptop.  They’re telling me there’s been a liquid spillage inside the machine, and therefore any repairs can’t be covered by the warranty.  To my knowledge there has never EVER been any liquid anywhere near this machine.  So I’m completely baffled and pissed.  They’re sending it back, I guess I’ll have to chuck it.  What a fucking bummer!  Could they be mistaken about a thing like this?  I treat my stuff with great care and I reckon I would know if I’d gotten my laptop wet.  I haven’t.  Ugh.

Yay, I broke it!

So!  My old iBook is all fuckered up again, whoo-hoo!  Just like I promised, I put it through its paces trying to get it to mess up before the AppleCare protection runs out next March.  And I’m very very good at what I do.  (grin) Well, I wasn’t doing anything outlandish, just running it daily and using iTunes, listening for thunking noises and stuff like that.  It was running just fine for several days, but yesterday it froze up a couple of times again — same as before, overheating for no reason, freezing up and requiring a cold reboot.  I did hear one more thunk from the hard drive, or maybe it was more like a sharp "DINK!" So after a couple of these reboots, it gave me a blank off-white screen and nothing else, wouldn’t start at all.

(As you can probably tell already, this is going to be another one of those techie rants that will only be interesting to Rob J and maybe two or three other Mac geeks out there.  Feel free to continue, but I can’t guarantee your eyes won’t glaze over if you’re not one of those people.)

WOW!!! Airport rocks

Guess what!  I’m in the Munich airport waiting for my connecting flight to Valencia.  I opened up my iBook just for kicks, found an Airport network, and got online!!!  I’m very very impressed.  Really glad I got that Airport card now.

The flight over here went fine.  They didn’t give me any trouble about my guitar case; I was a little worried about that.  I sat next to a guy from Munich named Stephane; we spent the whole flight making fun of all the other passengers.  Good times.  Now I have three hours to kill… uggghh.  I’m so tired.  It’s 2:14 in the morning for me but 8:30am or something here.  Really glad the first show isn’t until tomorrow.

I kinda doubt I’ll be able to get online this easily over the next few weeks, so if you don’t hear from me, you’ll know why!

Steve Jobs keynote

I’m watching Steve Jobs’ keynote speech right now.  Testify!!  Jaguar, now revealed as Mac OS 10.2, won’t be out until August 24th, and the calendar app won’t be out ’til September.  Oh well, but there’s a new iTunes coming out today.  They’re coming out with an upgraded iPod, 20 gigs for the same price I paid for my tennie!  AND a remote, AND a case.  Shit.
