Hyperlinkomatic

I’m playing with Hyperlinkomatic, which I found the other day through a post on Boing Boing.  It’s pretty cool, I think I love it.  I want to keep all my web-centric data on the web!  I can’t believe Google isn’t doing something like this. DUH!!!! Get on the stick guys, and give us a way to manage all these links you’re finding for us.  If Yahoo can do it, y’all can do it better.

Some sort of statement

One of my commenters is tro… ::ahem:: ASKing for a statement from me in support of independent music. I know, it’s a little crazy but I guess I’ve confused people by what I’ve said before about filesharing. So in case I haven’t made it perfectly clear as mud already, I have MIXED emotions. I see the good and I see the bad. So here are a few of those feelings for the record, one more time in no particular order:

OMFG!!! StickyBrain update

Chronos has FINALLY released a mini upgrade to StickyBrain, one of the first programs I registered when I switched to Mac. Yup…

fixed a bug that allowed Private notes to be viewed using the sticky slider in the Control Palette even if Show Private Items hadn’t been selected.

This is the bug that I first complained about on September 28, 2002. I don’t see why it had to take so long to release this, but I’m relieved I can no longer accuse them of abandoning their product. I still use it every day; I have yet to find anything that works better for reminders.

My songbook, myself

I’ve been trying to work on new songs practically every day, but can’t finish anything.  I REALLY need to get my freakin’ songbook back; I’m afraid I’ll never get anything done without it.  I accidentally left it with a friend of mine back around 9-11 and he hasn’t sent it back to me.  Of course I told him how important it is to me, and that I can’t really function as a songwriter without it.  He keeps saying he’ll send it but he never does.  Well, I’m seeing him this weekend for sure, and you can bet I won’t leave without that thing.  It serves me right, too.  This is karma payback for all the friends that I myself have blown off in various ways over the years.  I would love to blame my friend for all my musical constipation but I know that’s just a cop-out.  What’s really to blame, I dunno.  Missing my songbook sure isn’t HELPING though.

Bottoming out

I WANT TO GO HOME!!!!!!!!!! Please God let me go home now. I’m freezing cold. I’m sleeping in a shithole in Oslo, my socks are wet, I’ve been crying all night, I’m sick and I want to go home now. Please let me go home. Please please please please please.

We’re all pirates to them

Another excellent article in Wired, Bracing for the Digital Crackdown. It runs down the entertainment industry’s repeated attacks on consumers, and notes: "Each of the measures assumes the user’s guilt and attempts to create a preemptive solution." Guilty until proven innocent.  Or just flat guilty, since we’re all being punished just the same, whether or not we’ve ever copied a CD.

There is doubt

"There is no doubt, mass copying off the Internet is illegal and deserves to be a high priority for the Department of Justice,"
- RIAA Chairman Hilary Rosen

Everything about this is wrong.  There’s plenty of doubt.  Copying from the internet is not necessarily illegal. And it doesn’t deserve to be even looked at by the DOJ, much less be a high priority.  Hilary Rosen is high!!  On power and money and greed and control.

Open Letter to the RIAA

I’m an indie recording artist.  I run my own website, and I used to have three online radio stations streaming 24 hours a day.  Now I have NONE thanks to your efforts to make music illegal (or financially impossible) for us to broadcast.

I object to everything you’ve done to prevent people from sharing their music with others.  You’re in fact killing all music and creativity everywhere you go.  I think you’re monsters, and it makes me ashamed to be a musician when there are greedy pigs like you representing us.

Au revoir to AG pals

I’m running around on Audiogalaxy trying to gather e-mail addresses and new locations for all the people I’ve met in the past ~2 years, and all the genre-specific groups I’ve joined at one time or another.  It’s pretty sad.  The message boards over there are all boiling over with postings.  Most people are cursing the RIAA and a lot of them are swearing they’ll never buy another CD again.  I keep thinking… please don’t boycott the INDIE labels!! But it’s no use, people are just furious, and for good reason.  It’s like someone coming in and taking away our TV remote… we want to be able to hear good music, and THEN choose what we’re going to buy, not the other way around!  And most of all, we want access to music that is no longer in print.  For me that’s the biggest problem of all.  If you can’t buy something, and you’re not allowed to share anything but the "authorized" material, then 90% of everything that’s ever been recorded in the past hundred years is off-limits.  That’s just a crime; there has to be a better way!!

Audiogalaxy is done for

Looks like Audiogalaxy is done for.  My queue suddenly disappeared; every song on the whole site is now blocked!  Except for the few things that are being specially hosted on AG’s own servers, which is nothing I really want.  They’ve fixed it so musicians are going to have to "opt in" to get their songs shared on AG… which means my little group is kaput.

I shouldn’t whine

Well, I’m giving myself plenty of flack for what I posted there before… the whining about the guy talking about my love life.  He didn’t print any quotes I didn’t SAY…!!  I mean… if I hadn’t been talking about these things, he wouldn’t have printed that stuff.  They ask the questions, and I go off.  I start blabbing and the only thing in my mind is that I want to tell this person whatever it is they want to know.  I’m thinking of it as a conversation with a person who’s interested in what makes you tick (which is true).  The fact that it’s a pretty one-sided conversation is normal, ‘cuz I just love talking about myself!  Wouldn’t you rather talk about yourself than have to sit there listening and pondering somebody else’s sob story?  (heheh)

Happy Halloween

Sorry the site has been so dead lately.  It’s because I’m working on music, I assure you!  Check out the discography for more info.  I’ve been having tons of computer and phone-line problems lately as well, causing me to only be able to connect to the ‘net at 21000 baud.  That’s another big reason why the site hasn’t been updated very much.  I ordered DSL service for me and John, which will hopefully solve all the connectivity problems, but the wait for installation is taking forever, and meanwhile I’m forced to use this crappy phone-line.  Ugh.  I’m getting booted off the line so often that it’s very difficult to get anything done on the web.  The family tree has been all but abandoned as well… but I promise to start kicking ass with all this stuff as soon as I’m able.

Gotta work, new poster

Well, everything’s a little calmer today. I finally broke down and asked my dad for some money, and he said okay, so I’m very very relieved!! I really do have the best daddy on earth… he lets me get away with murder and I know this. I’m almost thirty-four years old and I don’t think a year has gone by where I haven’t asked for money at one point or another. I know my sister Lucie doesn’t do this!! But she’s a lawyer and I’m a musician… I know that’s no excuse though. Nobody should feel sorry for me when I bitch about money, because I MADE my bed… I totally CHOSE to be a musician, and I was pretty well aware of the financial dangers of that choice. It’s an up-and-down source of income… it’s like choosing to be a mooch half the time! I guess I really can’t get away with living off my name alone… haha… at least not yet. But it WAS fun while it lasted. Daddy did say "you have to get a job" — so I guess that clinches it, I will be looking for work when I come back next week. UGHHHH. Poor Daddy… I don’t envy him, getting saddled with a daughter like me. I’m a handicapped child… my WALLET is permanently disabled.

Ulnal tunnel syndrome

Note: This is a journal entry — it was written on paper or on my computer, then transferred to my website, maybe years later.

Well I am Shocked and Amazed that I have neglected writing for so long.  I’ve been involved in a lot of things, and lazy besides.

Ever since I came back from Texas, we’ve had nothing but snow and ice, more snow and more ice — I think three separate snowstorms, making the entire city an ice rink. We had three more inches today, and really, if it rains and turns to ice again I’m gonna get the skates out.  So we haven’t been able to make trips in the car except a few trips for clean clothes & provisions.

I value my good eye

Clacker picture from the Wall Street JournalI spent the entire day yesterday thinking it was Wednesday and how that typing lady was supposed to call me back and give me the job-or-no-job verdict.  Well, now it really is Wednesday and she never called anyway.

Anyhow, Melissa finally called me today, and now I’m not so sure.  She’s definitely coming back for the first week in September, which seems just around the corner.  She’s all enthusiastic about us working together in the music department, really kicking some butt.  And Danny totally wants me to stay, it’s like unthinkable for me to leave.  So I told him flat out that I needed to know, one way or another, and soon, so I can "start" (ha ha) to look for something else.  I also said I needed more money.
