No more Mystery Songs, oh well
Monday July 21, 2003 – 5:56 amLast week’s Mystery Song was "Don’t Stop The Music" by Sixten Jansson, and with that I say adieu to this particular category in my blog. I haven’t been personally hassled by anyone, I’ve just thought about it and decided that now is is a pretty good time to stop. It takes tons of bandwidth that I should be saving for my own music, and it’s a legally questionable thing to do, obviously. But more than anything I need to cut down on distractions as much as possible, so I can work more on my own music. I am going to continue giving away some of my tunes here; they’re my recordings and that’s my choice. But I don’t want them be republished elsewhere without my permission, and I must reluctantly conclude that I should follow the golden rule and do the same for other musicians, and the labels (or thugs) they choose to work with. Even the out-of print stuff isn’t really mine to give away. So… one less thing to worry about, one less mixed emotion for me!
Mystery Song 046
Tuesday July 15, 2003 – 10:19 amSo, we’re at number 46. Last week’s song was by one of the greatest of the greats, George Jones of course, with his song "Eskimo Pie", an ode to a sweet northern beauty. The voice is beyond reproach, but the song is so politically incorrect that they’ve never had the nerve to rerelease it to a modern audience. But the love is undeniable, so where’s the problem? Well, it’s just so insulting to equate her with an ice-cream bar, but he’s really not doing that — or is he? ::sigh:: Life is like that.
Mystery Song 045
Tuesday July 8, 2003 – 10:31 amLast week’s Mystery Song was a live outtake of "Are You Lonesome Tonight", attempted by Elvis Presley. I have no idea what was going on there, but he could NOT stop laughing!! It’s from a Swedish compilation; I got it from a member of my old Incredibly Strange Music group on Audiogalaxy.
This week’s song is ready, as usual! Don’t spoil the surprise, now…
Mystery Song 044
Tuesday July 1, 2003 – 11:12 amLast week’s mystery song was "Guilty" by Little Jimmy Scott. What a fabulous voice, eh? This week’s song I can’t talk about right now, sorry. :-)
Mystery Song 043
Tuesday June 24, 2003 – 11:36 amRoasted, toasted and posted, just the way you like it. :-)
Last week’s mystery song was "Snow Job" by the late Bruce Haack, purveyor of electronica for children. I’m amazed more people haven’t heard of him; I think his music is just magical. There are a couple of compilations of his work out there if you check around and maybe do the mail-order thing.
Mystery Song 042
Tuesday June 17, 2003 – 10:33 amThis week’s mystery song is ready and waiting. Can’t believe it took me so long to get around to this particular mystery artist. Last week’s song was a piece of work called "Chloe" by Leona Anderson, ripped especially for you from her album Music To Suffer By. I hope y’all can appreciate the true majesty of that voice. :-)

The new mystery song is freshly ripped and ready to go. Not that I’m going to tell you what it is or anything. Last week’s song was "Where Shadows Go" by the wonderful Buddy Knox, off his 1968 album GYPSY MAN. That’s another thing I had to rip off the vinyl because, to the best of my knowledge, they never *@&!# released it on CD.
Mystery Song 040
Tuesday June 3, 2003 – 9:24 amThis week’s mystery offering is something I ripped awhile back, from deep in my stacks-a-wax. Last week’s gem was also ripped from vinyl — "Hippy In A Blunder" by Johnny Buckett, off a great out-of-print 80’s compilation called "Bent, Batty & ‘Bnoxious!"

Tuesday May 27, 2003 – 12:24 pm
Last week’s mystery song was "Sole Sole" by the father’n'daughter team of Willy & Willeke (Alberti, that is). I got that beauty while I was touring in Holland — how could I not buy it with a picture like that? And it’s weird because it’s a Dutch record, but all the songs are in Italian, but look how blonde she is! Whatever, I think they’re marvelous. So anyway, if you want more of the same (not!), this week’s song is ready to go. I still haven’t had a chance to do any new ripping of old vinyl but I have lots of older rips I can use in the meantime.
Mystery Song 038
Tuesday May 20, 2003 – 7:35 pmLast week’s mystery song was a cute little number called "Desert Blues", by the Rhythm Wreckers. Got it from the Western Swing group back in the ol’ Audiogalaxy days, so thank you Tunewrangler! This week’s tune is now available as well. It’s completely different from the last one, as usual.
Feel free to say hi if you haven’t posted here before. :-)
Mystery Song 037
Tuesday May 13, 2003 – 10:14 amLast week’s mystery song was "It’s Been a Drag" by James Ray, the flip side to his 1962 single "If You Gotta Make A Fool Of Somebody." I picked that up at the great big Record Exchange in Kansas City when we were out visiting Scott & Jolie. This week’s song is a whole lot older, and it’s a whole ‘nother genre too. I like variety. :-)
Boy, there are a lot more people downloading the mystery songs than there used to be; it’s gone up to 80-100 every week. Who are these people? They don’t call, they don’t write… how come nobody comments? Of course we can only really talk about last week’s song, so I could see how that could get confusing. I’ll end up looking like David Cross in that episode of Mr. Show, where he plays the host of a call-in talk show that’s pre-recorded a week early…
Mystery Song 036
Tuesday May 6, 2003 – 11:45 pmThis week’s mystery is a tune that the also-enigmatic mister James Apt gave me on a mix tape years ago. I finally found the vinyl and ripped it for ya. Last week’s song was "Love Dance of the Nodding Folk" by Current 93, an oddity that was sent out on my old group on Audiogalaxy. I so miss that group, it was such good times.
Mystery Song 035
Tuesday April 29, 2003 – 9:04 amTime for this week’s Mystery Song! Last week’s song was "Ua Like No A Like" by the lovely miss Annette Hanshaw. It just might be the most beautiful song I’ve ever heard in my whole life. I never get tired of hearing it.
Mystery Song 034
Tuesday April 22, 2003 – 1:55 pmIt’s ready! Last week’s mystery song was "My Feet Start Tapping" by Adolph Babel. Or rather, it’s a song-poem with lyrics by Adolph Babel; I dunno who the artist is. I got the MP3 from my bad-music pal Whammo, back in the Napster daze.
