Backups for Sonny Smith

Awhile back in Chicago, Leroy Bach asked me to join in on a song he was recording.  I was to be singing in a girly trio type thing along with my good pals, the divas of the barroom, Kelly Hogan and Nora O’Connor.  It was for a project he was producing for his friend Sonny Smith.  Sonny is awesome.  He’s a San Francisco native, a traveling-troubadour type dude, the kind of guy who always wears a hat.  He’s toured around and recorded with some of my most esteemed musical contemporaries, like Jolie Holland and Neko Case.  So anyway, this record’s been out for a few months now. It’s called FRUITVALE and it’s very very good.  I’ve been negligent about posting it to my discography — got my copy last week though, so here it is.

Playing with the templates

Don’t be alarmed if things keep flipping around in here… I finally figured out how to get the upcoming-shows entries to only appear in the shows section so they’re no longer cluttering up the front page and confusing everyone.  Do let me know if anything really weird happens (broken links, etc) — I’m just fixing stuff as I run across these funkinesses but I’m sure there are lots I haven’t seen yet.  God, this site is such a beast!!!  I love it but I hate it, ha ha.

Lucie’s avatar contest!

My sister Lucie is away from the internet until Tuesday but I talked to her on the phone about my search for the perfect avatar for her.  I have her permission to post the ones I’ve gotten so far, and turn it into some kinda contest.  So if anyone else wants to submit more, please do, and when she gets back she’ll pick her favorite.  She says "Lil Sis" is fine, and also consents to some sort of usage of one of her old nicknames, "Lucifer".  Teehee!!  Or, if you have any other bright ideas, go for it!  Post a comment if you have one to submit, and I’ll e-mail you back with my address if you don’t have it already.  It needs to be a 50×50 image, there are no other rules.  Multiple submissions are fine, and Lucie’s decision will be final.  :-)

Quotations

I’m getting better with my CSS; I feel freer now to make up my own div-tags for certain styles I need to apply to my posts. The newest one is <div class="quotation">… you can see it in action on the previous post, and in the press categories like this one. My album reviews were especially messed up… sometimes my own comments would be italicized, and the quotation would be in plaintext, and sometimes it’d be the other way around, or maybe I’d use blockquotes instead. Well I cleaned ‘em all up so now you always see a gray bar to the left of quoted text, and only album titles and things that need emphasis are italicized. I know… who cares, but I think it looks nicer and it’s a lot easier to see who said what.

How to ruin your website in 5 minutes

Colors, ugh.  I’m trying to come up with a decent color scheme to use for the idea I mentioned in the last post. The idea is to get my posts to appear in differently-styled boxes, using colors based on their categories.  I.e., a post in ‘Spam Tirades’ would logically be colored diarrhea-brown with little turds around the border, whereas something in ‘my photos’ might look better against a plain cream-colored box.  Trouble is, I have a LOT of categories and don’t want to get too crazy with this.
