The cellphone guy is SOOO pissed
Wednesday September 15, 2004 – 6:53 pmSo, my downstairs neighbor, the guy who talks on his cellphone without his clothes on, wants the whole world to know that he is FUCKING DISGUSTED with his cable service. He threw a total shit-fit, he is mad as hell! However, when they asked him to go inside and turn the box off and turn it back on, it started working again. So he said he’d call them back the NEXT time it fucks up.
I think I have his phone number now. What should I do? I really want to play some prank with it but I’m not totally sure I got the number right. Ideas?

To make sure you have it right, you could do a reverse lookup. Even if you don’t know his name, I presume you know his address. Then you can start sending faxes to his cellphone, etc. Oh wait, reverse lookup might not work with his cell.

Oh I tried that already, I got nothin’, but one of the reverse lookup thingys told me it was a US Cellular number, which means I have the option of using their text-messaging interface. But what should I do with it? What I really ought to do is borrow a stranger’s cellphone and call him, make sure the voice is the same and hang up. THEN once I’m sure, let the wicked pranking begin.

You could use a payphone.

A payphone would work indeed. Or you could place an ad in a free weekly saying that he is giving away porn or something else embarrassing… :)

Presuming you have his name and cel number, call his cellular service (okay, you might have to call several until you get the right one) and report "your" telephone stolen. Say you want your service suspended. You’ll probably have to enlist a male friend or use a deep voice.
I know someone who did this to Russell Simmons, who was driving everyone crazy talking on his cel at Time Cafe in NYC. He went insane when his phone suddenly stopped working. Much hilarity ensued.

You: "Is your refregerator running?"
Him: "Yes"
You: "Don’t you think you ought to go catch it?"

That’s a lot more along the lines of what I was thinking, heheh. As much of an asshole as the guy is, I don’t need to be the one to really push him over the edge — he’s already doing that to himself judging by the number of obscenities he was screaming last night. Not just into the air but into the phone, to the Comcast rep. Even after he figured out his cable was working again, he slammed the door and continued screaming "FUCK!!" over and over. So, he’s crazy, and if what goes around comes around, that guy’s got it comin’ to him in spades.
I think I’ll just complain to my landord this time; I haven’t done that yet but last night’s tirade was over-the-top enough that I really should. I’d be really surprised if somebody hasn’t complained already.

E:”Is there a John there?"
CPG:”No?”
E:”Then what do you use? A Dixie Cup?"

a related hypothetical - what measures are appropriate for a particularly vile troll who commented on a thread dealing with a blogger’s death that he was glad the blogger was gone. the particular site does ban commenters when they step over the line, but rarely edits the comments as they come in. the site posted the troll’s ISP information and said, "have at it," but then everyone was wondering what to do with it. any ideas?

They can’t do anything except complain to the ISP; it probably won’t get him kicked off but maybe it could add to a paper trail about him. Just like in reality I can’t really do anything about the cellphone guy besides complain to my landlord, and that one complaint won’t get him kicked out of my building or anything (nor should it). It’s not illegal to be an asshole.

ISP information or IP address scott… because those are two levels of power indeed.

apologies to edith…
it was this, matthew (someone later on the thread says that Cybertrends is blocked in some fashion, probably by this guy):
(complete whois info removed by edith)

I don’t think Matthew was asking you to post that info here Scott. If he has notifications set, he’ll get the info. If not, and he actually does want to see it, he can ask you for it. But it should be given to him privately; I don’t post IP addresses on my site.

if you want to mess with the guys mind you don’t have to do it on the phone. a friend of mine had a weird neighbor in the apartment below - always making noise at odd hours etc etc…finally one day my friend decided he’d do something to irritate back….he had a little drum machine that he used for strumming along to..well, he turned it on, not too loud where someone would call the police and complain, but just loud enough where it could be heard…..then he left the apartment and went to work for the day…..

Edith, not to be too nitpicky, but your Referrers link (below) displays IP addresses on your site…
September 17th, 2004 at 7:20 am
Huh. Well, the referrers page is only viewable if you’re logged in as a member; now you’ve made the link public but it’s still only clickable by members. And I don’t think the page was showing IP addresses before I did the upgrade a few weeks ago. Think I’ll just remove the link and make the page viewable by site administrators from now on.
