The payoff
Monday August 23, 2004 – 4:02 pmSo I met up with my bassist Ryan Hembrey at the Hideout this afternoon for our first "rehearsal", which was really more just so I could give him a CD and learn ‘im the new songs we’ll be using on the me & Manishevitz tour in December. All that BULLSHIT Rian Murphy’s been puttin’ me through (ha ha) finally paid off: I got through every damn song with hardly a mistake at all. Got to show off my new(-ish) guitar too, what an improvement in sound!! And I got to sing through the PA finally, oh what a relief that was. So everything was really a lot tighter on my end than it normally would be after such a long hiatus. It was all super easy for Ryan of course; he’s such a quick study and he’s very good at watching my hands and/or playing things by ear (even though he’s secretly deaf).
So yeah, oh boy. We’re meeting again next week with Via (the guitarist); by that time I should have a tentative list of songs we can use for the tour, both old and new ones. I’m thinkin’ we should get at least 20 prepared; that’ll give us leeway to cut songs if some don’t work out, and we’ll be able to make adjustments on the fly if the set lengths turn out to be longer or shorter than the hour or hour-and-ten-minutes they normally are. If we need more, I’ll teach ‘em more or I’ll do ‘em myself! I got plenty, and I hope I’ll have even more (and better) new tunes by the time we leave. :-)
I’m so psyched!!

you’ve prolly covered the new guitar in a previous post, but i’m new and would enjoy a detail or two. i remember seeing you a couple years back with a light blue(?) strat. great show. i remember thinking: "this is the way a band should sound."

Man, isn’t Via phenomenal? What a great musician… he totally puts Manishevitz over the top, IMHO. His contributions to City Life cannot be ignored. He may vaguely remember me, but tell him and Busch that Parker Paul’s drummer says hello. :)

I’m psyched to Edith,I look forward to your next record and maybe a show down near Florida that I could go to.Will Rain be producing?I’m hoping that you might have Jim O’Rourke in the studio for some stuff.
I was shocked to read your(were) a cigarette smoker with that amazing voice.

Keith - yeah, Via’s gonna be my secret weapon on this tour no doubt. :-)
monkey - yes Rian’s gonna produce. Personnel and all the rest is still being talked about, but I can’t talk about that, heheh.
tdaschel, thanks! My strat is Lake Placid Blue, I’ve had that one since I was 16. But it’s not NEARLY as well suited to my music as the new one, which is a Gibson ES-335 in Beale Street Blue. I’m going to try to edit this comment in a second to see if it’ll let me include a pic I just took; if not I’ll post it as a new entry.
(Bleh. it didn’t work. stupid security measures…)

It seems greedy to have only commented once in the past and now come asking for gmail but if you haven’t already given it away I’ll take it.
