Trying out yoga
Monday August 23, 2004 – 8:44 amFor the past few days I’ve been doing little 20-minute yoga workouts in the morning, using DVD-Rs that I taped off the Wisdom Channel last year. The show is called Yoga Zone… kinda hilarious that I spent all that time taping and editing the shows to get them onto DVD-Rs, but never actually did the workouts until now! Whatever, better late than never. I’m doing this as a supplement to the daily walking I started awhile back; I felt like I was concentrating too much on pounding the pavement, and not enough on stretching and general muscle-building. So it feels good to do this, and it’s such a short and easy workout that I’ll probably continue every day. I hope. :-)
One weird thing I noticed right away is that both my hands, but especially the right one, tend to erupt into tremors if I press on ‘em too hard during these workouts, and afterwards… I’m pretty sure it’s because I’m stressing some muscles that haven’t been used in quite awhile. My left hand is stronger, I assume because I’ve been using it to make chords on my guitar, whereas the right one I barely use at all; if I don’t start using it again it might as well morph itself into a paddle-shape just for mouse-clicking. So yeah, there are obviously some weak muscles in there that I need to keep an eye on, and slowly build them up again without hurting myself. I got no problem with that!
I was doing situps for the past few days but I dunno, I think the yoga idea is much better. I’ll still be building my muscles but gently, that’s the ticket. It promotes allover physical health which is what I’m really going for here; I got no real use for a six-pack, thank you very much. I just want to get myself in better SHAPE, I don’t wanna be a FREAK about it. :-)

I got plenty of use for a six-pack. Maybe that’s why I have this gut.

Ok, first don’t let the fact that I’m a drummer change your opinion of me… but I was having a lot of muscle problems recently, mostly due to all the time I spent at my computer. The moust not only caused soreness in my wrist, but also one particular area of my back. When I moved my mouse, keyboard, etc. I ended up getting a sore neck (I had to raise the monitor a bit to help with that).
However, for immediate help, I contacted a massage therapist. It was so intense and such a revelation, that I applied at a school for alternative medicine to become a drummer/massage therapist.
Anyway, if you continue to have problems, you might want to think about a few massages. If you can find an experienced state-licensed therapist, you’ll really help out your body.

Heheh… Keith, I only made the sweeping drummer statement because I was trying to backpedal quickly but in a humorous way if possible. What really happened is that I found out that guy I was talking about isn’t single, and I had no idea about that and was totally mortified that I’d blogged about him at all. In fact he’s just as far away from being single as he could possibly be. So he isn’t cute. Guys who aren’t single are NOT cute, and in no way crushworthy whatsoever. They are ugly, ugly people. Tee hee! Okay, now I’m kidding again but you know.
The only time I’ve had a real massage was while I was on tour, and what a mistake because it got me so fucking sick… toxins being released I guess, it gave me a bad cold almost immediately… the dripping and snorting and sneezing started *while* I was on the damn table!! It was nuts and I never would’ve believed it but now I totally respect the authoritah of the massage in getting that crap flushed outta yer system. And oh yeah, I’m sure it’s good for the muscles too. One day I intend to do it again but… when I’m *not* on tour, heheh.

Been following this book I found on mi ma’s bookshelf awhile back, Richard Hittleman’s 28 Day Yoga Exercise Plan
(http://www.fetchbook.info/compare.do?search=0911104216)
Day 22 now and I’m feeling pretty excellent. Still can’t do the Locust pose worth a damn but made surprising headway into everything else. The pictures r a hoot if nothing else!

the hand shaking things while doing yoga can probably be taken care of by getting a couple of those blocks they sell with the yoga mats and balls and such. i had the same issues (or my wrists would ache from the hard angle i’d put them into) and they went away with use of the yoga blocks.
